Return Ban

I returned an item today and received a slip saying I couldn’t return for 365 days.  I find this apalling as every single time I go into Sephora I am pushed to purchase and told I can return if I don’t like the item. I have also been told that I can’t get samples and to just purchase the item.  This is totally contradictory why are sales associates telling us to purchase if we are going to get penalized?
