Perfume exchange

A family member gifted me for Christmas a perfume (which during this holiday season had a 20% discount) but i tried to exchange the perfume for another perfume of the same brand, size and price, just another smell. Well it turned out that the gifted person has to pay the difference for an exchange of the same item but different smell. I believe this is very predatory since its very common during holiday seasons to gift and exchange items making the item actually not discounted but having to pay double taxes on the item.
