My gift card isc't working

Hello. I received a gift card and tried to use it online but it says it is inactive. I called customer service and they said there is a hold on the gift card and that it cannot be used. It was a Christmas gift from my in-laws and they do not have the receipt. It was for $100. They said there was nothing they could do about it on the phone! This is insane!
