Kroger/Sephora gift card scam?!

I got a $50 Sephora gift card for Christmas. I finally went to use it a few weeks ago and the pin could not be read. the result was like I was the Hulk and had scratched it off furiously, but I was gentle and I have never ever had this happen. I had to go into a Sephora store to have them swipe it today, (per a Sephora customer service rep) only to be told it was likely a gift card from the “Kroger gift card scam” and had a zero balance now. The employee said without a receipt, Kroger can’t help me either. Of course I don’t have the receipt… it was a gift. This seems wrong on many levels 😫
