JCP Gift card return credit

I have a question? I made an online purchase a while back and then returned one of the items (totally legit and painless - with receipt, linked to my insider account, etc) and I was given a JCP gift card for a little under $60.  The employee told me I could use it online and at JCP Sephoras, but today as I was about to make a purchase I learned that I can't use it online AND after talking to customer service over chat, he thinks it probably won't work in-store either. He said that I shouldn't have received a regular JCP gift card, but that JCP Sephora stores have special merchandise return cards. Am I out $60? I really wanted a Chanel perfume that my local store doesn't have.
