Issue with Gift Card

I volunteer for a group that purchased a $100 gift card for a family we adopted at Christmas Time. The teenager scratched the numbers off however you can still see the bar code and all of the numbers below the bar code. We also still have the receipt where it was purchased from Walgreens. I called the number on the back of the gift card and they basically said they could not do anything about it. Recommended we take to a Sephora to see if they can scan. Issue is our nearest Sephora is in a Kohls store and they stated they can not scan. Please help as I think it’s terrible business to just tell people tough luck.
