In-Store Sephora Foundation Samples

Do I need to buy something to receive free foundation samples? I feel awkward going into a Sephora store to ask for foundation samples and walk out without a purchase.  

What is the maximum amount of foundation samples can I get?

Long story short: I hate buying a foundation that seems like my shade and when I go home to apply, I look like a complete mess and I have to return it. I don't want to buy and return foundation every time I have a mismatch.

You're allowed to get up to 3 samples I believe, or maybe its 5. I interviewed at Sephora Canada Headoffice a few years back.
