Gift receipts expire???

I was given a gift for my birthday and I know I won't use it. I went in to exchange the product or at least be given store credit. I was told my gift receipt had expired as it's only valid for 30 days. I was blown away. I've never ever heard of a gift receipt expiring! I told them I had only just received it. Both the associate and manager were like sorry, don't care. I've asked customer service online - same response and "I'm sorry you feel that way". Absolutely horrible customer service and I'm completely blown away that this is their rule. How can I connect to someone higher or any other ideas of what I can do? Thanks.
