Gift cards with $0 balance

I tried using a couple gift cards to place an order tonight but got an error code telling me the cards had a balance of $0. They were bought on different days and have been in my possession since I purchased them; additionally the silver coating over the PIN codes was intact on both and the activation receipts show that money was loaded to the cards. Is that something you can help me with or do I follow up with the place I purchased the gift cards (a local grocery store)?

followup ETA: it was a glitch on the website - the cards showed as having the balance when I looked them up on the website later.
