Gift card unused but balance $0

Please beware when purchasing a gift card. 
I purchased a gift card for someone for their birthday. How embarrassing for them to let me now there was no balance. Customer service and policy states they cannot help me.

I purchased through a third party retailer 

I contacted them but since it was activated on their end, they were unable to help me

@wendddaay that explains why this happened.   It is an unfortunate fact of life that people scam those cards purchased at third party retailers.
