Gift card number scratched off

I received a gift card for my birthday and went to sephora store to use it, I scratched gift card in store because the bar code or swiping did not work. The sales lady even advised me to scratched slowly because the #s may get peeled, apparently this is a common issue with sephora gift cards. After scratching… she was right, I can only read 13 digit and and 4 digit pin. I called and chat customer service and they weren’t able to help. Stating that the gift cards are treated as cash. So then my friend just wasted her cash then buying this gift card for me that I can’t use? 

anybody has resolution for this? I have the first 13 digits. Thank you!
