Gift card not activated

I was given a $50 gift card for christmas that was not activated at the point of purchase. My dad has the transaction number to prove that it was paid for in full, but the store where the gift card was purchased said that they can't do anything to help, as it is for a third party. Would someone be able to provide some support? I'm just slightly lost on what to do, and I would just like to have the gift card activated.
