Gift card issue

Received a gift card, but three of the numbers scratched off. Still have the pin and the rest of the gift card number. Called Sephora and was advised there isn't anything they can do and I should have the person I received it from go back to the store for a refund or a new card. There aren't any options here? Anyone else had this issue? I'm an hour from the closest store so going in to see if the bar code "might" scan isn't really an option.
