Flash Shipping Length Determination

Is Flash Shipping done per calendar year, or per 12 months? For example, I don't order that often that I need to purchase it this close to the end of the year if it expires in December. However, if the clock starts when I purchase in September and follows 12 months until next September 2018, being a full year, I would purchase it. Please let me know. Thank you.
