Expired Birthday Gift

Hello,

I picked up my birthday gift yesterday from a Sephora in a Kohls. I feel extremely upset because when I opened the Ilia package today, the mascara had an extremely strong order of rubber and mold. It threw me off as I have never had a mascara smell like that. I then googled it just to double check that is what it should smell like but it says that means it has expired and now I feel upset that I was given an old birthday gift and I almost used it 😞 

Even if the mascara isn’t expired and it just smells like that, it is so strong and extremely disgusting. Is there anything that can be done to help me? I was really excited as Sephora always gives amazing birthday gifts. Thank you in advance
