Defective gift card?

I received a gift card for my birthday today, but when I tried to check out online, it’s asking for an 8 digit pin #. My gift card only has a six digit PIN, so I’m not able to complete my online transaction and the sale ends today. Every number I’ve called says the only solution is to go in stores (as though it’s a quick and easy trip - it’s not). Very disappointing.
