Can't redeem gift card

I was making an order in the Sephora and I wanted to use a $50 Sephora gift card. I tried to submit the payment but it gave me an error asking to refresh the basket. I went back to my basket, refreshed the page and tried to place the order again.  However, now my gift card shows a $0 balance! The order was not placed. When I looked at my credit card I could see a charge made by sephora but a refund showed immediately after. How can the gift card be at $0??
