Brand new gift card with zero balance.

I received a gift card from a friend this summer, and upon trying to register said card I kept getting a "this card has a zero balance" message. Which makes no sense as the gray strip on the back was intact,  and my friends receipt shows the card was activated on her end. Every attempt to get help from the retailer has failed, as did my earlier attempt to get help from Sephora customer service chat... the agent just didn't seem interested. Everybody just keeps passing the buck and it isn't fair, my friend spent money on a gift in good faith and it's just disappeared into thin air? And "there's nothing anyone can do" ? Really disappointing Sephora 🙁
