Birthday Gift Card Does Not Work- No Help from Customer Service

Received a Sephora gift card for my birthday. Wish i hadn't. To begin, I was embarrassed at the Sephora store because once they scratched the back of the card and entered to redeem, they told me it was not working. So I had to purchase on my personal card. When I got home, I went to the Sephora website to enter the card number and pin to check the balance. The website was requesting a 16-digit number, however my gift card only had 13 digits. Embarrassed for a second time, I had to approach the person that purchased the gift card for me. She informed me it was purchased from a local CVS. I called 1877-737-4672 and the customer service associate told me that 1. I must have scratched off the last 3 digits on the card, 2. I would need to go back to wherever the card was originally purchased , and 3. There was nothing they could do . Well, the numbers and pin that were lightly scratched off by the Sephora cashier are clear as day, and nothing additional was scratched off. The giver of  the gift card didn't think holding on to the receipt would be so crucial.  What gives?!
