Apple Pay/Return

Hello I made an online purchase and payed with Apple Pay and some items didn’t work out and I went to a store to return them and a Sephora employee was not able to help me out apparently she said I had to ship the items back if I wanted the refund back to my original payment because I had payed with Apple Pay online and if I returned the items in store she could only offer me store credit. Her reason was because I had payed with Apple Pay online and Apple Pay switches the #’s on your card. Has anyone experienced this? If you could please help, thank you.
