$10 off and return

I used my $10 off by using 500 points, but exchanged a part of the purchase, same item different color. I was required to pay the difference between original price and amount used by the return, but was told the points would be refunded. Is this true? Otherwise I got $3 of a lip pencil, and lost out on a lot of points!

I really wished then that the sales associates knew this. Would have saved me the hassle of a return and losing points!  Very frustrating.
