Ditching DevaCurl!

I had been a devotee of DevaCurl for less than a year. I went to a special DevaCurl event at the Sephora Century City mall store in May of 2019. I loved the event and went from using one of their styling products to using about 5 or 6. I was just starting to wear my hair curly/wavy and I was thrilled with the results. My waves held their shape and I loved my hair. It was probably in November that I started to have a problem. My hair wasnโ€™t holding its shape and I had flaky patches on my scalp. It was extremely dry and brittle. Then my hair began shedding...a lot! I thought it was me! Or maybe my last haircut had been terribly wrong. I couldnโ€™t figure out what was happening. In January I started reading these reports from other women, with all of my hair issues, who used DevaCurl. I couldnโ€™t believe it! DevaCurl was the problem! Well, hereโ€™s the good news. I took ALL of my DevaCurl products out the shower and stopped using them. I switched to Kerastase, Ouidad, Bumble & Bumble and Olaplex. Itโ€™s been almost 3 weeks and things are starting to improve! My hair isnโ€™t as dry. My scalp is less flaky. So much less shedding!!! My curls and waves are starting to regain their pattern, but I think thatโ€™s going to take a minute. Theyโ€™ve been through a lot! Iโ€™m so disappointed and dismayed with DevaCurl. Did they suddenly change their formulas/ingredients? Why are so many people having these issues? Now what Iโ€™d like is my money back from Sephora. Does anyone know if Sephora is taking back DevaCurl products? Have there been any recalls issued?

Re: Ditching DevaCurl!

Deva has put out several statements, itโ€™s incredible what social media can do. I encourage everyone to look up their most recent statements from last week on FB. The formulas/packaging were Not ever changed.

RE: Ditching DevaCurl!

A lot of women have had the same problems youโ€™re having, as well as intense hair breakage and extreme hair loss due to the products. I would definitely stop using their products and find others to try out. To start, you might use Cantu curl cream because it is really hydrating, helps hold curls for days, and has heat protection in the formula.

Re: Ditching DevaCurl!

@Maxshop I believe a class action suit has been filed against DevaCurl, but who knows what will come of that and how long it might take. In the meantime, DevaCurl maintains that there is nothing wrong with their products and that they've gone through extensive testing to make sure they're safe.

I, too, was a big DevaCurl devotee, but noticed my scalp would get extremely flaky and itchy. I just assumed it was just me getting older and menopause, etc... I had even gone to a dermatologist who prescribed a steroid mousse for my scalp. It didn't even occur to me to tell her about the DevaCurl.

Finally I stopped using all of it because I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm currently using other products, and while my hair doesn't respond the way it used to when I initially starting using DevaCurl (it had gotten dry and had lost its curl as of late, which is another reason why I stopped using it), it looks pretty good. The chronic itching has most definitely stopped. I still have flaking, but not nearly as bad. Unfortunately I have a ton of DevaCurl products and in large sizes to boot.

If I'm not mistaken (and I could be, so don't take this as gospel) I believe Lorraine Massey, the original owner of DevaCurl, sold the line not too long ago. That could explain the some of the dramatic changes.
