DevaCurl Replacements?

Hey curlies! Hoping to reach out to the community to get some advice on trying some new product lines. I’ve been using solely DevaCurl products for about two years, and loved how they used to make my hair look and feel. Now I’m finding I’m having significant hair loss, breakage, dryness, and my curls are lacking the definition they once had. Doing some research I came across the controversy with their products which has kind of solidified me hoping to try a new line...I’ve used Redken, AG (HATED it), Garnier, and Bumble & Bumble in the past. I’d love to try Ouidad but it’s not readily available in Canada (I actually reached out to Sephora to see if they’d introduce it here for us northern curlies). I’ve been looking at the Briogeo line but it has mixed reviews? I have VERY fine, high porosity, 3B curls. It’s very hard to find something that gives me the definition I need without weighing down my hair and losing volume. Thanks in advance for your help!

RE: DevaCurl Replacements?

I’m a big fan of LUS brand. It has done a lot for my hair. I have dry course 2c/3a hair and found LUS a couple years ago. Unfortunately you can only buy it directly from the site right now. I then finish it off with Loma Curly Cream. I get compliments on my curls all the time.

RE: DevaCurl Replacements?

It’s a TON of trial and error and can be SUPER overwhelming because there’s soooo many products. A few brand recommendations though: Shea moisture, Miss Jessie’s, mixed chicks, and kinky curl! There all target/drug store brands but I have tried EVERY brand you could ever possible imagine. And these have worked best for me! AVEDA also has some amazing curl enhancing products that can encourage your curls to curl more if that’s the look your going for. MY HOLY GRAIL products have been: Jelly Soft curls by miss Jessie’s, Mixed chicks leave-in conditioner, Shea moisture coconut and hibiscus curl and style milk, Shea moisture Coconut and Hibiscus curl enhancing smoothie, and any Shea Moisture “repair and restore” products! They also make the BEST hair mask I’ve ever used. My BEST Tips: Do NOT use towels to dry your hair, get a diffuser or air dry, RAKE your leave-in and SCRUNCH your styling products, use a light gel, invest in a WET brush comb or Pic instead of a normal brush, DEEP CONDITION, put product in while your hair is SOAKING wet, and make sure you clean your scalp to keep from product buildup! Also with Fine curls make sure you use lighter products to keep your curls from falling out! Also STOP using Deavacurl- they are facing TONS of lawsuits and scandal right now make sure you read about it BEFORE using products.

Re: DevaCurl Replacements?

@StephanieRae  Thanks so much for asking this! I literally just bought DevaCurl products during the Spring sale and fell in love with my natural hair. I was so excited to put the heating tools away and literally stock piled DevaCurl products because they were on a good sale. Last night I came across the scandal and I'm super devastated. I've tried a bunch of random products in the past with no luck. What were your thoughts on Garnier and Bumble & Bumble products?

For reference, I'm looking for replacements of the Ultra Defining Gel and the Whipped Wave Maker.

Hey 🙂 i use Shea Moisture products, they are amazing and not that pricey. You can find them everywhere in Canada, at Pharmaprix (Shoppers) or Jean Coutu if you live in Québec. I love the Hydrating line of this brand (i think the packaging is blue)!

Re: DevaCurl Replacements?

I use IGK Smoke and Mirrors Conditioning Cleansing Oil. It works well but you can't use too much. Then I put in their coconut oil leave in, followed by Ouai hair oil. I used to love the Moroccanoil Cleansing Cream but after a while it left a build up. My hair is quite dry so I can take the oil. Anyway, I think it's worth trying IGK. Obviously it's different for everyone.

Girl, I was literally about to post the same thing. Thanks for asking this

Re: DevaCurl Replacements?

@StephanieRaeI really like aveda's curly line- the curly shampoo and co-wash I think might be best for your needs since the actual conditioner is pretty heavy. My hair tends to be oilier so I don't use conditioner much myself and my hair ias mid-weight. Styling wise I like a lot of their products but generally I'd ask someone in-store (y'know, when we can go to stores again). Here at sephora I like TOGETHER BEAUTY - Whatever Wherever Leave-In Conditioner and Living proof's perfect hair day line is really nice

If you're a dry shampoo gal R+Co had a really nice paste one that was/is super easy to control and work into your scalp without disturbing the curl pattern
