So what’s the issue with DevaCurl?

Hi! I’ve been a long time user of DevaCurl (+10 years). I recently noticed my hair thinking but thought it was age related (in my 40s) but now I don’t know! I have the whole line of products. Thinking of switching shampoo and conditioner but wonder about the styling products as well (curl cream and gel). What do you guys think? What are you using? I’m a 3A/3B although right now my hair looks like 3A that lacks volume. Help! Thanks.

So what’s the issue with DevaCurl?

I stopped using Deva Curl because my scalp was itching really bad. However I was using the no poo line and my stylist said that it wasn't cleaning my hair good enough causing some build up which can lead to hair shedding and itchy scalp. I switched to the build up booster and was using that as a shampoo for a little bit. My scalp was still itchy but not as bad. Went and got a Deva cut and they used innersense on my hair. The itchiness was gone. I'm currently using Innersense and I love it. Not sure if it was the Deva Curl products causing they itchiness or buildup. All I know is I switched to Innersense and the itchiness was gone and I was told it took time to completely rid your hair of build up. I stopped using Deva Curl products maybe 4 months ago. Still have buildup booster and heaven in hair sitting on my shelf 😔. I heard how great they where and really wanted to like them. I was trying to rid my hair of "buildup" and give them a fair shot before blaming them. If I do go back will not get the no poo or decadence line of product. It was to heavy and not cleaning my hair well, very gentle cleanse.

Re: So what’s the issue with DevaCurl?

Before you jump to any conclusions @zaza18, please visit your dermatologist to discuss this matter. I have been using DevaCurl products for almost 7 years and I have not noticed any problems. No matter what products I use on my thick wavy hair, I will experience shedding. It is just my hair. I realize that some people may have legitimate concerns using DevaCurl products but I do not recommend self diagnosis. Just try using some different products to see if your hair improves. Hope you get the answers that you are looking for.

Re: So what’s the issue with DevaCurl?

@zaza18 lots of people have been saying lately that using Devacurl is the cause for their hair loss (more than is normal), so much so that they’ve been getting bald patches and losing density. People have also been complaining of dryness and disrupted curl patterns after continuous DC use. There’s been a lot of hypotheses online as to why this could be happening. Some people are saying heat exposure has affected the product, others are saying DC put relaxer ingredients in after they changed the formula (kinda ridiculous), others are saying that co-washing leads to excessive buildup in the scalp which can cause a specific yeast to grow and lead to hair loss.

I honestly have no idea if any of these are even remotely true. I’ve been using DEVACURL - Low-Poo Delight Weightless Waves Mild Lather Cleanser and DEVACURL - One Condition Delight Weightless Waves Conditioner pretty consistently for at least 3 years and have never had any issues. When I moved to a dryer climate I had to alternate more hair masks and I’ve recently had some dandruff but I don’t believe that to be Devacurl’s fault since my skin is dry all over and the water here is on the harder side. I’ve switched shampoo and conditioner several times over the past few months to see if that was the cause and nothing changed. I’ve tried a lot of DC’s other products and most have worked for me so I don’t have any clue as to if what people are saying is true. I also have waves instead of more defined curls so I can’t vouch for that either. I definitely have not had any hair loss beyond normal and I don’t have excessive buildup, either.

I think if the products are working for you you shouldn’t be in a rush to toss them. If anything, keep an eye out and see if you feel any adverse effects.

Re: So what’s the issue with DevaCurl?

Some DevaCurl works for me and some doesn't @zaza18. The gels (with the exception of DEVACURL - B'LEAVE-IN™ Miracle Curl Plumper) tend to make my hair feel dry and look bad. I prefer the Noo Poo and One Condition over the delight line despite having wavy hair. Like skincare, hair care is unique to the individual. I am watching the situation but am not jumping on the hate bandwagon. Plenty of companies reformulate or change suppliers without notice to consumers so I could see it being different than the past. But some of the claims are extreme - it causes cancer. There really needs to be studies before people proclaim things like that. Just my two cents.

@zaza18

There isn’t an issue with DC. One uneducated stylist hypothesized her theories on YouTube and they were way off base by anyone who understands science/chemistry.
Your hair goes through growth cycles where it is going to shed more. Also hormonal changes will cause thinning - a myriad of things can contribute to thinning hair.

Re: So what’s the issue with DevaCurl?

@GG84   It had crossed my mind that people saw multiple people complain about hair shedding using DC and then were experiencing the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon with their own hair, in which they are extra conscientious of something they just learned about.  They may have been going to shed hair anyway, but because they use DC as well it must be that.

I’m not saying there’s no grounds behind peoples complaints but that that had crossed my mind.  Thinning hair is a natural and common occurrence so I’m waiting for more information before jumping on the accusatory bandwagon.

I would recommend going on Instagram and looking up the hashtag #recalldevacurl there are hundreds and hundreds of women with the exact same problems. All using devacurl products. Yes I understand we lose our hair, Curly hair especially. It's not just losing hair, these women are going bald. With extremely uncomfortable scalp issues.. It ruins ur cuticle at the root and destroys the curl pattern. From the multipule pages I follow all over social media about the curly girl method, theres speculation that DC started putting relaxer I. the products. Clearly there needs to be more research done on these products and I'm just going off my own personal experience and from what I've seen all over social media. I wouldn't recommend deva curl until the recall is done and everything is sorted out.

I wouldn't say it's not an issue when theres a lawsuit going on against devacurl and literally hundreds of women are losing their hair!

Re: So what’s the issue with DevaCurl?

@zaza18   I haven’t experienced hair thinning with DevaCurl shampoo and conditioner but what I have experienced is that after continuous use my hair gets weighed down.   I feel it leaves a residue behind which is fabulous at first but as it builds up not so much.
I use the combo once a week as a non stripping wash but then alternately use a more clarifying shampoo and conditioner so the build up isn’t affecting my scalp. I still get the benefits of how gentle it is.  (And I’m not wasting it)

I like the curl cream for my ends only cause again it’s heavy and there’s no need to go all the way up the hair strand with it.
