Curly Hair Routine

I just recently started to embrace my curly hair but I’m not sure I’m using the right products. I shampoo and condition with Pantene and then while it’s still wet I put on shea moisture leave in conditioner and defuse. I’ve read that devacurl is good brand to use or using sulfate free products to bring curly hair to its full potential but don’t know where to start. Any suggestions?

Re: Curly Hair Routine

Start by following the curly girl method (no sulfates or silicones) and focus on hydration. Sulfates will strip the natural oils from your hair and silicones coat the hair and don't let moisture in. Once your curls are hydrated you'll notice that they improve over time. There are tons of helpful curly hair blogs and websites. The DevaCurl blog and naturallycurly.com are good places to start. Naturallycurly.com is great for determining your curl type and porosity which is helpful when picking products. I'm a DevaCurl fan through and through. The videos they provide on their site for application direction are super helpful for getting good results. The products are expensive, but you can ask for free samples in Sephora stores to trial different options. Best of luck on your curly hair journey!

RE: Curly Hair Routine

I have tried Deva Curl it’s a good product as far as definition and moisture and it’s a fairly light product compared to some others. Personally Pantene’s curl line made my Hair feel dry but Aussie Moist conditioner is a great cheap alternative to more expensive ones and Mielle Organics is a good line also.

Re: Curly Hair Routine

I havent tried Devacurl products but I have heard great things.

I have tied Pantene and I actually did like their products especially their curl mousse. I would suggest using Frizz Ease dream curls styling spray. I spray that in wet hair before styling and helps manage frizz. I also recently bought a couple of Curl Keeper

products and I really like them. I find they really help define my curls.

also, I was never one to blow dry my hair, because I was afraid it would dry my hair out. But recently got a blow dryer with a diffuser, and my hair hasnt looked better!

I really hope that helps 🙂

RE: Curly Hair Routine

I think embracing my curls is like an ongoing project of experimentation. One product works for a while and then one day it doesn’t. I’ve used Deva and now I don’t. I’ve used a lot of different brands. Right now, I’m all about Alterna. Is your stylist Deva certified? Stay away from sulfates - it will dry your hair out which causes frizziness. Lots of brands are sulfate free.
