Dark circles show through makeup no matter what

Hi! I am seriously struggling with my dark circles. No matter what I use to cover them I feel like you can still see them. I have a very very sensitive under eye, like every eye cream I try burns due to have intermittent eczema and sensitive skin. I’ve had some health issues lately so it’s made them bad and it’s an insecurity of mine that I would really love to be able to figure out how to cover. I have a dry under eye and I have a very fair complexion! Currently I’ve been using: either Huda color corrector or tarte cc corrector with haus labs concealer or Anastasia concealer. I use the hourglass concealer brush and I even let my concealer dry down a bit before blending for more coverage. I’m switching between the Sephora powder foundation and the one size powder foundation. The one size gives me great coverage but has flash back in photos which I’m not a fan of. Please provide me any recommendations possible!

products I’ve tried that didn’t work:

tower 28 concealer

one size pink powder

hourglass concealer- like the best out of all of these

tarte radiant concealer

Natasha denona concealer

Laura mercier brightening powder

givenchy loose mixed color powder

hourglass setting powder

kosas setting powder

ive probably tried more but that’s all I can remember!

Thank you so much for your help!

Re: Dark circles show through makeup no matter what

Hi, I have similar issues with dark circles.  My complexion is fairly neutral (leaning cool) and light, and the best I've found lately is Jane Iredale Circle Delete in Shade 2 (Peach.)   I use the darker peach as my concealer even though it is a color corrector, pat it in so that it blends, and usually powder lightly over it.  Sometimes I mix it with Glossier 11 and/or 10 in the summer depending on how much sun I'm getting.  I have tried heavier concealers that are more opaque but I feel like they just draw attention to that area and don't blend in enough to match my skin tone. I like something that is a little more natural, especially because I don't usually wear foundation.  The Circle Delete has been a nice balance of coverage, shade, and finish for that purpose.

Re: Dark circles show through makeup no matter what

Sorry I can’t help with the main concern but wanted to contribute as I have super sensitive/reactive skin & eczema and I’ve struggled with several eye care products aggravating those issues for me as well. By process of elimination, the conclusion I've drawn is that i’m sensitive to shea butter (Butyrospermum parkii)—once i figured it out, I told my mum as i’d been giving her the products that didn’t work for me and she wasn’t having a great time with them either; turns out she’s also sensitive to it but on a lesser scale as she doesn’t really have reactive skin or eczema, just some sensitivity. For her, it was less but still noticeable redness and just that irritated feeling.

It’s not soemthing I’ve had much success in finding any scientific support for (but that stuff often takes DECADES esp when it’s counter to what’s commonly accepted such as a product people tout as being super hydrating and soothing being very irritating and drying) but it could be worth looking into. Also highly suggest (if you haven’t yet) considering looking into fragrances in products, usually it’s a pretty bad combo for me (shea butter + certain fragraces) but sometimes just certain perfume ingredients will break me out in hives and/or eczema

Also on that note, when my eczema does come up on my lids, Tatcha’s serum stick is an absolute godsend and I cannot recommend it enough! I carry it in my purse or pocket and will apply throughout the day (over my makeup and skincare stuff) and at night I keep it on my nightstand so if i wake up with watery eyes (idk if that’s just my eyelid eczema or if it’s common) throughout the night, I can dab my eyes dry and reapply. It's helped immensely with the healing time!

Honestly, right now all i’m using in my eye area is The Ordinary’s Buffet Copper Peptides serum and Drunk Elephant’s Protini peptide cream. They both are super gentle for me and keep my skin pretty content throughout the day.

One last thing—as far as eye/skincare, there are the caffeinated eye-care products that claim to help reduce the look of circles but idk if I just haven’t found one without shea butter or if the caffeine is also irritating but also a thought. Wishing you the best of luck finding the right products!

Re: Dark circles show through makeup no matter what

@emccandless for sure try a color corrector. I also have super dark eye circles and concealer alone is really not enough to neutralize them.

Two I enjoy are NARS Radiant Creamy Liquid Color Corrector  and Smashbox Smashbox X Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector Fair/Light  . I would say the Becca one gives more intense correcting, but the Nars one is easier to work with and blend, so if you are sensitive, it might be the better option for you. I tend to use the Nars one under concealer when I'm doing a fuller face of makeup whereas the Becca one I will just throw on by itself for running errands or whatever. If you're looking for a cheaper one, the Kaja Cat Nap Under Eye Brightener Peach-Tone Brightener is decent, not as good as the others but a good starter one.

Re: Dark circles show through makeup no matter what

I realize that this may not be the answer you're looking for, but look into color theory.  By understanding color theory,  you'll be able to properly select products that will deliver the full coverage based on color theory.  Bill Nye, RCMA and Danessa Myricks Beauty have amazing products with great pigmentation to provide full coverage with minimal amount of product.

I hope this is helpful.

Good luck. 👩🏽‍🏫🍎👩🏽‍🎨

Re: Dark circles show through makeup no matter what

@emccandless You’ve used some amazing products there! I’m sorry to hear you’re not getting the effect you want from them.

To piggyback off of what @KarmaAlegre said, colour theory can help combat discolouration.

Colour that are across from each are complimentary to each other. When used on top of each other, they cancel each other out. If you have bluish discolouration from your dark circles, use something orangey on top of it. If they seem more purple, try yellow and if greenish, try red. I do this with my 5 o’clock shadow to make it disappear. Then I set the product with powder and continue the rest of my routine on top, using more patting or stippling motions where I applied the colour correction so I don’t accidentally wipe it off. I’m just using a cheap cream blush from elf for this and it works great. I have eczema too and I find this doesn’t bother it and cause irritation.

I hope this helps!

Re: Dark circles show through makeup no matter what

Are you familiar with  stila One Step Correct , @emccandless?

Re: Dark circles show through makeup no matter what

I haven’t tried this!

Re: Dark circles show through makeup no matter what

@emccandless have you tried using an actual color corrector?

Re: Dark circles show through makeup no matter what

What would that be/ do you have any products recommendations? I have tried the Huda pink and the tarte cc color corrector. Thanks!
