My hair

My hair is extremely matted on top of my head. My hair is very long (to my waist) and very straight. It's been 3 or more months like this. What can I do to keep from having to shave it???

Water is not a tangle or mattes friend, for future reference (hope you will never need this advice) do not wet your hair thinking this will make it easier or to apply product. If you are unable to see a pro pick up some WD40 (yes the kind for squeaky doors) and thinning shears from amazon. You should be fine with just the WD40 (be mindful of your eyes) but you really need to coat the matte. Your comb will glide through. If not, grab the thinning shears and cut into 3 sections; this is not cutting your hair but removing bulk. It should loosen the hold of the matte.

The safest way is to work in sections. You can try a lot of conditioner or a detangling product, then start gently from the ends using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers first. If it’s very tight at the scalp, sometimes adding a bit of oil can help loosen it. But if it feels too overwhelming, a professional stylist can usually detangle it over time without cutting everything off.
