How to achieve soft hair

I have straight hair, almost pencil straight but with a bit of volume. My hair though is very thick, but I feel like I can never achieve to have soft hair. My hair just feels a bit weird and never soft. I live in a very humid place which doesn’t really help. Does anyone have product recommendations that can help me achieve soft healthy hair?
