Highlight or Hair color ?

Hi,

I want to highlight my hair, I have never done it. I do have lots of grey hair as well. Want to know if highlight is better or hair color ?

Try an allover semi-permanent colour first.  I have a little nest of grays and to avoid the skunk effect and being a slave to colour, I find that this approach works best for me.  Yes, in 4-6 months my grays comes back (also, I don't wash my hair more than 2x a week) but you will get a nice rich colour in the first 2 months without damaging your hair and it is not that expensive.

@Anonymous This is always the problem with grays. If you start coloring, you need to do a more permanent color to cover them. But then that leaves re-growth (which — if you have a lot of grays — gives the whole skunk streak look). But then you almost become a slave to coloring.

It would be helpful to know what your original hair color is/was, but I think highlighting, especially if you've never done it, would be the safer option. It would add lighter-colored pieces which will blend better with the existing grays and regrowth will not be as much of an issue because the pieces are so much smaller. 

ETA: You can also do low lighting which will add smaller streaks of darker color to your hair. It will lessen the gray, but not cover it completely. Whatever you decide, make sure your stylist is a good one. Get recommendations form people whose hair you really like or is similar to the way you want yours to look.

With such dark hair, I'm not sure what highlight color you would get that wouldn't stand out or showcase your grays. You could do chocolate brown highlights but the silver would show. I would say just dye your hair. Or embrace the grays, I think silver hair is trending anyway!
