Hair styling products (hairspray and gel) for itchy and flaky scalp

My boyfriend suffers from a patch of red and irritated skin on his scalp and he uses alot of hair styling (hair gel and hairspray) products in the morning for work. I want to switch him over to products that are less irritating for his scalp but he has to use some sort of gel or cream to first style his hair and then a strong spray to hold it in place. 

Suggestions please!!

You might want to add a few things, as none of these styling types products are going to cure his scalp.

Using a detoxing shampoo to get rid of product build-up. I'm really into the LIVING PROOF - Perfect Hair Day Triple Detox Shampoo. I use it once a week to get rid of product build up. But there's other great ones. This is a bit strong and a bit drying so make sure the hair is being conditioned and treated after.

For the itchy scalp I'd recommend a couple of varieties of products.

The first is a spot treatment like the Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment Serum 1 oz/ 30 mL.

The second is a scalp scrub. There's a lot of amazing options, including CHRISTOPHE ROBIN - Purifying Scalp Scrub with Sea Salt, OUAI Cleansing Scalp & Body Sugar Scrub 8.8 oz/ 250 g, and Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-exfoliating Scalp Scrub Shampoo 8 oz/ 236 mL. I'd use these once a week on a different day than the detox shampoo.
