Hair experiment 🧪

Hello! I was wondering if anyone would recommend a few good hair masks/products? I have wavy/curly hair that is very thick. I will be adding partial highlights soon, I have never dyed my hair so I’m not positive how to take care of it. I already have an everyday sulfate free shampoo and I was going to ask my hair dresser what color shampoo I should use every other day. I was just wondering if there was any good products that could help keep it healthy? Thank you! 🙂

Re: Hair experiment 🧪

@PockyChopsticks I reccomend adding Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector Pre-Shampoo Hair Repair Treatment 3.3 oz/ 100 mL to your hair care routine, as well as the Verb Hydrating Hair Treatment Mask. I used to have bleached blond hair and.these products really helped to repair damage and create strong healthy locks.

Hi @PockyChopsticks!

You must be excited to get your hair done for the first time!  What color will you be dying it?

When getting your hair done, you want your hair to already be super healthy.  I've made the mistake of getting my hair done when it wasn't the healthiest and I suffered from hair breakage.  I've been bleaching and toning my thick, wavy, black hair silver for over a year.

Highlights shouldn't be as bad as getting all your hair done tho.

Make sure not to wash your hair every day, maybe 2-3 times a week, and use a moisturizing hair oil twice a day.  I use Verb Ghost Weightless Oil to Fight Frizz and Enhance Shine 2 oz/ 60 mL in the morning and Moroccanoil Moroccanoil Treatment Light Hair Oil for Fine Hair 3.4 oz/ 100 mL at night.

Ariana Grande's trick is to use Coconut oil found at grocery stores.  She suffered from severe breakage after dying and re-dying her hair red every week for her show.

Shampoo, conditioner, hair masks and treatments with protein in them help to keep your hair strong so you don't suffer from hair breakage.  I recently started using Redken Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner and it's been amazing for my damaged hair.  A hairstylist on here recommended it to me.  Sulfate free is great, but for my hair, that just isn't good enough 😕.  I bought the Redken from their official store on Amazon.

I haven't gotten a good mask or treatment yet, but I've been eyeing the Redken Extreme Anti-Snap Anti-Breakage Leave-In Treatment.  I've been using Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector Pre-Shampoo Hair Repair Treatment 3.3 oz/ 100 mL for a while but not sure if it's helping.

Some other important things:

  • Avoid using hot tools on your hair as much as possible.  The ideal temperature of the tool should be the lowest setting but no higher than the temperature used when baking cookies.
  • Don't tie your hair up for more than a few hours every day, especially in a tight bun or pony tail.  The pulling of the hair can cause breakage.  Loose scrunchies are the best.
  • Use a protectant spray to protect from both heat and pollution.  A good one is Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat Protectant Leave In Conditioner Primer 8.5 oz/ 25...

Thank you so much! 😄 I actually don’t wash my hair everyday maybe about twice a week, depending. I’m switching to Alba’s mega moisturizing shampoo/conditioner. I also never use heat tools and let my hair air dry! I use ogx coconut water spray from time to time. My hair has trouble observing heavy oils for a strange reason, but it likes the coconut water spray. I’v actually been looking at Redken as well, it seemed to be the most well know. I’m thinking to get partial caramel highlights, I’v been told my hair is a light brown in color. I was going to ask my hair dresser what colors she would recommend. If I should go lighter or maybe put a few mixes in! Oh! I know you are supposed to avoid washing your hair before bleaching it, do you think I should refrain from washing it for a couple days before highlights? Thank you again lol

@PockyChopsticks

It seems like you already have most of this stuff figured out, which is great!  It definitely helps to have naturally lighter hair color so there's less bleaching time.

And yes, I would avoid washing hair a few days prior to getting your hair done.  The oils will protect your scalp during the bleaching process.  Your stylist will wash your hair for you after bleaching/ dying.
