Finding Haircare Products

Hello!

I am looking for hair care products--from shampoo, to conditioner, to styling tools and proper hair care tips. My hair is color-treated, wavy, with pretty thick individual strands. My ends (and hair in general) is extraordinarily dehydrated, to the point where the ends feel like hay. I can tell when I need a wash day when my roots feel EXTREMELY oily (but the rest of my hair is still extremely dry). My hair does not necessarily get wet instantaneously--it has to get wet in layers almost (?)

This is a prolonged hair emergency that needs solving!! Any advice helps. Thank you so much!!!

Re: Finding Haircare Products

Hi! There are SO many great products out there & sometimes it takes a little trial and error. I’ll give some recs, but more hair care tips.

Washing

  • If you’re due for a hair cut, just cut off the dead ends. I love my super long hair but it’s not serving me well if the ends are extremely damaged
  • Brush your hair before shower. So your not fighting tangles after when hair is most fragile (wet)
  • wash your hair the day it’s dirty there is no such thing as “training” your hair to go longer btwn washes. Plus this just allows oil & dirt to accumulate and prevent healthy hair growth
  • ** would consider shampooing twice if your hair is still greasy after showers. Make sure hair is wet before and that you really massage & lather well with fingertips
  • No hot water in the shower, lukewarm is better. Or your scalp will dry out
  • **Continuously greasy scalp usually indicates a dry scalp. Hydrate it. You can use an oil before the shower (I know seems scary) JVN Complete Pre-Wash Scalp & Hair Strengthening Treatment Oil 1.7 oz/ 50 mL …but my FAV of all time is not sold at Sephora. It’s the Coco & Eve Pro Youth Scalp Mask, you apply all throughout your scalp and hair and deeply hydrates. Highly recommend
  • Deep condition with a hair mask, but not your scalp. Put hair in a clip and leave in for 10 min. Rinse well. Like I mentioned Coco&Eve makes a great one
  • Gently brush hair with wide tooth comb. Or even a tangle teezer or wet brush. Key is to be gentle
  • **Apply a leave in conditioner right after the shower. Press in the product and scrunch & squeeze those waves. This is probably the most imp step cause it locks in moisture and seals strands i Love JVN Complete Instant Recovery Heat Protectant Leave-In Serum 3.4 oz/ 100 mL
  • Oil your ends: Rub in palms and evenly distribute. Not saturate. If you’re gonna blow dry i like to do this after. I LOVE Kérastase Elixir Ultime Hydrating Hair Oil Serum 3.4 oz/ 100 mL  and  Moroccanoil Moroccanoil Treatment Hair Oil

Hair Protection

  • If you can avoid heat, do so. Do your best to minimize
  • ALWAYS use heat protectant and make sure your coating all the strands
  • Silk pillow cases are great BUT a sleeping with a silk bonnet will change your life (sell them everywhere, target)

Lanza healing oils or olapex

Re: Finding Haircare Products

@rosierue23 years ago I remember Paula Begoun saying Lanza was a good line. What products in particular do you like?

Re: Finding Haircare Products

i use the keratin healing oil line, shammppo, condition, bond repair, intensive repair mask and oil drops.   i absolutely love this line.  i recently tried Olaplex 3, 4, & 5 this was equally as great.  hope this helps

Re: Finding Haircare Products

Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Hair Mask 5 oz/ 150 mL or amika Soulfood Nourishing Hair Mask are excellent for dry ends @mangosncoconuts They are soooo good.

I heard from a hair stylist once, you want to make sure your hair is thoroughly wet before shampooing and really make sure your rinse it out the same way. Extra rinse.

If your scalp is oily I'd suggest switching from hot to warm. Hot water feels so good but it can actually trigger more oil production.

Re: Finding Haircare Products

i use redken and their hair mask its so good. I also apply a amika hair mask for and hour to dry hair before i shower, helps hydrate my hair so much!

@mangosncoconuts amika is good if you are looking for something expensive. Olaplex is also amazing.
