Are steam straighteners more or less damaging compared to traditional flat irons?

I've seen a couple steam straighteners and I'm wondering how good they are, as they haven't exploded in popularity like other tools.  I'm mainly curious if they're more or less damaging than flat irons. And, are the results the same?
