๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

Hello BIC beauties! ๐Ÿ˜Š I realized we don't have an active music thread here in BIC (there seem to be a few different short-lived threads from years past, but nothing recent as far as I could find), and I thought it would be fun to have a place to recommend our favorite artists and songs, chat about what we've been listening to lately, post our song of the day or anything else music related! Everyone is welcome to join in however you like, however often you like, and all types of music are welcome! ๐Ÿ’œ

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

@itsfi  my parents don't like musicals but my grandmother does, so I guess it skipped a generation ๐Ÿ˜…

That sounds like a great plan, I am hoping to keep going over my pan it plans for the next couple of weeks and hopefully I'll be all set once the new year rolls around! Out of curiosity, how do you decide how many products/categories to include in your panning project for the year? I know you have been participating in this challenge for several years now, so you've probably learned a lot about what works for you through trial and error.

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

@caitbird, that's cool that you and your grandma share a love of musicals.

Oh, yes, I've had my share of trial and error periods with panning. For the last couple of years, I've gone with 10 products at a time and that has worked for me. My plan is to have 10 pan products next year as well. Some years, I've had more goals, but still 10 products. So, for instance, the Natasha Denona Biba palette is 1 product but this year, I had 4 different goals - full pan on 3 shimmer shadows and hit pan on a matte shadow. The Yves Saint Laurent Couture Mini Clutch Eyeshadow Palette 100 Stora Dolls palette is on my list for next year's pan it! challenge - my ultimate goal is to pan the entire palette but for 2025, my aim is to hit pan one shadow. I haven't decided which shadow and for this first one, I won't target one shadow to pan, at least not initially, but will just use the palette and see what natually shows more dips and dents first. At some point during the year (or a subsequent year), I might call out a specific shadow in the quad that I'll work on hitting pan or full pan.

One year I decided to try to be cutesy and aimed for 22 products in 2022. Super catchy but my goodness, that was too much for me. At that time I swapped out skincare and hair care products much more frequently than I do now so perhaps with the right combination of pan items, I might be able to manage a pan project like that better nowadays, but 10 is a good fit for me for the last couple of years so I'm sticking to that - it gives me some structure to work through certain products and build up a habit / consistency of use, but it also allows me flexibility to incorporate other products into my routine should I want that.

Some other strategies that I've learned over the years include:

  • variety - having different goals, products and/or starting points for pan items - from a goals perspective, it was more practical to have different goals for different products. Mine generally fall into one of the following milestones - full pan, hit pan, just see how much product I work through in a year, use up half the bottle, etc. Some folks track use and have a goal of using a product X time during the year or using the challenge to track usage. From a variety in starting points perspective, I found that depending on the product, it can be helpful to have some products be brand new, while others are 1/2 full, or 3/4 full. For product variety, it's just nice to have options - whether it's the category of products (makeup, skincare, hair care, etc.) or the type of things within a category (floral perfumes, along with fresh scented, gourmand scented or smoky ones, etc.) Last year, my initial group of 10 products included 2 body care items, 3 hair care products, 2 makeup products, and 1 each of a skincare, nail care and fragrance item.

  • check in posts - some products I do a monthly check - in, others every other month or quarterly. Some I just check in when there's noticeable movement though with the latter, if I have something in that camp, I try to check in at the 6 month and 12 month mark. Some years, I've designated what my check-in schedule will be and others I just play it by ear (with the caveat that I do a check in at 6- and 12-months, even if it's to say or show little to no movement and/or to share that I'm moving it out of my pan project and either subbing in another product or just focusing on the other products in the project pan).

  • giving things a fair shake but being flexible - Unless something irritates my skin or just doesn't jive with me, I tend to keep at it with my pan products However, I've found it better when it comes to working through products to be more open to just letting something go early on if it doesn't work for me, despite reasonable efforts to use or repurpose the item. For example, one year, I repurposed a portion of one of the Biba shadows into nail polish and a portion of another shadow into tinted lip balm. The latter worked out and I used the remaining shadow for the same thing. Also, there was a year where I tried to use cream blushes but I only reached for those products when I realized I needed to post an update on my pan product, so there were probably 3 or 4 months where it got 1 use each month. I ended up swapping that out for something I was more inclined to use other than at the eleventh hour.

Some of it will just be about trial and error and finding out what works best for you. You can always start out with (a larger or smaller) pool of pan products and pare down or add to that throughout the year as you get a better idea of what and how the challenge is working out for your and work will work best based on your needs and lifestyle.

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

@itsfi  wow, thank you so much for sharing all your thoughts and insights, you've definitely given me a lot to think about! I feel like I have a tendency to overcommit and include too many items and goals in my projects, and then a lot of them carry over into the next year...but on the other hand, I do find it helpful to use the pan it project to keep track of my overall goals and keep myself accountable with my progress. So I guess I will try to assess what has worked and what didn't this year (and last), and tweak my plans for next year's project accordingly. And I will try to take your advice and compare your strategies to my current plans to see what might work better with some adjustment - thank you again! ๐Ÿ’œ

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

Getting into the holiday mood, today's song of the day is:

Elliot Maginot - Christmas On My Mind

I discovered this song quite by chance on YouTube a couple of years ago now, and I just think it's so lovely. Anybody have any fav Christmas/holiday songs?

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

@caitbird  I have a couple great holiday choices of songs. ....

  Glow by Brett Eldredge

Deck The Halls/Jingle Bells by Michael McDonald

Joy To The World by Mariah Carey

Peace On Earth/ Little Drummer Boy by David Bowie and Bing Crosby

Hope these hit your fancy.

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

@CocoLancome28 - The Bing & Bowie duet is great...it's a classic! ๐Ÿ’•

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

I love Christmas / holiday music @caitbird! So many favorites ... a few of them include:

  • Hark! The Herald Angel Sing
  • Christmas Canon
  • Carol of the Bells - my favorite version is the instrumentals only one by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

@itsfi  those are some great ones! I love Trans-Siberian Orchestra's holiday instrumentals.

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

@caitbird, I was thinking about going through a larger declutter sesh later in the month with that as my background (motivational) music. ๐Ÿ˜„๐ŸŽต๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽต๐ŸŽถ

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

@itsfi  that sounds like a fantastic plan! Always important to have that motivational soundtrack when tackling projects ๐Ÿ˜‚

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

This may be before your time @caitbird, but it'll remind me of little Kevin McAllister racing home to set his trap for the Wet Bandits in the original Home Alone movie. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

@itsfi  you know, I still have never seen Home Alone...I know of it through cultural osmosis, but haven't actually watched it myself. I guess it's on the never-ending list of "movies to see...someday" ๐Ÿ˜…

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

@caitbird - A couple of my faves are

- Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses

- Father Christmas by The Kinks

Re: ๐ŸŽถโœจSong of the Day and Music Thread!โœจ๐ŸŽถ

@Titian06  I don't think I know either of those ones, I will definitely check them out! I'm always on the hunt for new Christmas/holiday music this time of year. Thanks for the recommendations!
