Need help, Clueless when it comes to retinoids

Hi everyone!
I’m looking for some advice. I’ve been wanting to start dabbling into anti aging products and retinoids for a while.

I’m 37 and I’ve been getting dysport done in my forehead and lip filler.
obviously aging is normal and unavoidable so I’m just wondering what products I should be purchasing to slow down aging and what products I should be looking for and what order they should be applied AM and PM.

I have normal to dry skin.

I use TONS of glowy product. I do have great skin, I have people tell me all the time how beautiful my skin is BUT the wrinkles are what drive me nuts.

I have lines on my forehead still, around my eyes, wrinkles above my lip (I don’t smoke, never have) and extreme laugh lines and I’m starting to get jowls (genetics) so any help to avoid this getting worse over the next few years would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone!

Re: Need help, Clueless when it comes to retinoids

Hi,

I was about your age when I started to take care of my skin much better.  (before reading on...pardon the typos)

What helped me to start off was a skin care kit/routine from Origins.  At this time of year there are lots of kits.   It wasn't a lot of $ commitment...but boy...did I notice a difference.  A BIG one....I felt like I lost 7 years of age when I started to do somethings.

since then...I've developed a routine roughly based on what I can afford (drugstore) and what I am curious about and or few I consider necessary (higher end/boutique):

Usually I do Peptides in the morning and retinol at night.

morning:

gentle cleanser (Cetaphil or Vanicream (no fragrance) sometimes just water or water/lavendar oil drops)

Toner:  Lancome Comfort Rose / or Innisfree Green Tea or other (depending on what my skin feels (dry vs not/needy vs not)

sometimes I'll use Paula's Choice - 2% BHA

serum:  sometimes Lancome genefique/ sometimes I'll use Neutrogena hydraboost serum

usually some kind of Peptide - I like Copper Peptides Buffet (The Ordinary)

I'll follow up with a cream (Neutrogena Water Gel or whatever I have on hand (I've used Sephora Day Cream (with Peptides))

Eye:  Ordinary Caffeine drops / Neutrogena Hydraboost for eyes (blue tube) or Cetaphil (hyaluronic acid)

Night:

I try to double clean - sometimes with a cleansing Oil and foaming cleanser afterwards

At times I will use a glycolic cleanser and toner (Mario Badescu or The Ordinary)

Depending on my skin...I might use a serum (Estee Lauder repair)  and a good Vitamin E cream (Jason) or a facial oil (Rose Oil (Badger Organic or Biossance))

Most often I'll use a Retinol Serum.  I like the products from RoC - They have a serum (comes in both pump and in those mini pods)  paired with a retinol night cream.

RoC has a Retinol night cream (in a tube) or their cream in a jar (also retinol) but I will use whatever I have on hand (or skin needs)

Eyes:  Neutrogena Retinol repair (silver tube) and then Estee Lauder eye cream

Sometimes I'll do a facial with mud bask (Borghese Fango) or whatever (Caudelie DeTox or Tilbury Goddess)

Those help me a lot

I guess many people when they start out with retinoids advise starting little by little...I would agree.  When I overdid it (with any brand) my skin was mad.  So start out with small amounts/alternating nights (many advise to use it at night) and do NOT go out in the sun (or be sure to protect your skin) after using them.

People often say I look young for my age ...I look closer to mid 40s than 57.  I'm hopeful lifestyle and good skin care will help out.
