Facial oil comparison?

Hi all!

quick question- what is the differences between Drunk Elephant marula oil and Biossance Squalane and Rose Oil? Thanks!

Re: Facial oil comparison?

@afaustin95 Here's the beautypedia review on the DE (4/5 stars), and below that is the Biossance (3/5 stars):

Spoiler

Drunk Elephant's Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil is a straightforward product containing a single ingredient: Marula oil. The good news is that marula oil is an excellent ingredient for skin, and this product is packaged with regard for keeping this oil stable.

Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil comes in an opaque, square-shaped bottle with a dropper dispenser. That dispenser and package will help protect the oil from exposure to light and air, both of which can diminish its effectiveness. Inside the container is 100% marula oil, with no additives or fragrance.

So what's the big deal about this oil? While a single ingredient is never the solution to all skin concerns (the best skincare involves products with a host of beneficial ingredients), marula oil is a very good ingredient to consider if you have dry skin. Research shows it is both a rich source of beneficial fatty acids for skin, as well as antioxidants including tocopherol (vitamin E). There are even studies showing it can improve hyperpigmentation of skin. Clearly, marula oil offers anti-aging benefits. In fact, it could potentially live up to Drunk Elephant's claims that it can fight free radical damage while improving the look of wrinkles and redness, as well as improve skin elasticity; however, lots of other non-fragrant plant oils could make similar, research-supported boasts.

When it comes to aesthetics, the oil itself is lightweight enough that it can be applied directly to skin, absorbing within a couple of minutes. This oil is best for those with dry to very dry skin, though if you have oily or combination skin with patches of dryness, this can be applied to those areas without issue. In addition to using this oil on its own, it can be mixed with a moisturizer or serum if you need extra hydration.

Though it isn't the least expensive facial oil option out there— Acure Organics offers an alternative for less—Drunk Elephant's Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil is still worth considering if your beauty budget allows.

PROS:
  • Packaged in a container that will keep its beneficial components stable.
  • Marula oil is a rich source of antioxidants and fatty acids that offer anti-aging benefits.
  • Light oil texture can be used alone or mixed in other products.
  • Fragrance-free.
CONS:
  • Expensive.
  • Skin would likely get greater benefit from an oil blend.and here's the Biossance (3/5 stars):

Spoiler

Sometimes simpler is better with skin care, but not in the case of Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil, a Biossance product that shortchanges skin of what it needs to look and feel healthy. Even worse, it includes some ingredients that have the opposite effect.

Like all Biossance’s products, the packaging is solid: it comes in an opaque bottle with a dropper dispenser, which is important because that protects its antioxidant ingredients from breaking down in the presence of light and air.

As expected, this has an oil texture that’s best for those with normal to dry skin. It feels immediately hydrating and moisturizing and sinks into skin quickly to a non-greasy finish (though if you touch your face, it’s still very apparent you have oil on it).

This contains the brand’s favorite ingredient, squalane, which is an excellent emollient with antioxidant properties. Vitamin C is also in the mix in the form of textrahexyldecyl ascorbate, which can help brighten skin as this product claims it can. But that’s where the positives end.

Aside from those two ingredients, there’s very little else here in that’s beneficial to skin. It’s a lackluster, ho-hum formula whose ingredients simply don’t justify its price tag (you can get the two beneficial ingredients in other products for far, far less).

Then there’s the issue that the fragrant rose extract that helps give this product its name, as well as the fragrance ingredient geraniol, can irritate skin. There are other face oils that skip these irritants, plus contain a greater range of beneficial ingredients, so there’s not enough compelling reasons to choose this one.

PROS:
  • Feels moisturizing, yet non-greasy.
  • Contains skin-replenishing squalane and vitamin C.
CONS:
  • Doesn’t contain enough beneficial ingredients to warrant its price tag.
  • Contains fragrant rose extract and geraniol, which can irritate skin.
