Setting Powder before a full face?

Hey guys,

I am sorta new to the makeup scene (kinda but not really lol). I just wanted to hear your opinions and read your experiences on setting your face before applying foundation or a full face. I have major oily skin and I'm debating whether it might be something worth getting into. Yes, I understand not everyone's experience is the same but I'm hear to meet new people as well as learn new techniques. 🙂

@ItsBree I’ve used this technique and it works. What you want to do is prime, powder (just where you are most oily) apply foundation, setting spray and dry, powder again (with a damp sponge and press powder into your skin) setting spray and dry. Using setting spray between steps helps lock in all your product which makes oils harder to seep through. I do suggest only using this method for occasions where you reallllly need your makeup to last not for everyday wear.

I have oily skin and live in a fairly humid climate during the summer, so I've tried this technique a couple of times and haven't been overly impressed. I've had better luck with a good primer and setting spray.

I’ve never tried this, heard it does work for oily people.. but I would think it would add texture to dry skin types!

Re: Setting Powder before a full face?

@ItsBree  I don't have the oily skin issue (except for my forehead,) but I did use Cover FX's Illuminating Setting Spray first, then applied Tarte's powder foundation.  It was fine; I liked the slight glow I got.  Plus, I didn't feel like the setting spray set as much of a tacky layer for the powder, which would have made it not spread well and be too thick.

You have nothing to lose by trying!

@ItsBree I'm not sure you would get the results you're ho...

@ItsBree I'm not sure you would get the results you're hoping for by setting your face prior to applying foundation. I agree with others that a mattifying primer might be a good addition to your routine. If you are REALLY concerned you can check out some You Tube videos by Jaclyn Hill on how to Bake your face, but again this step is done after foundation.

I agree, waiting for foundation to dry and then setting reduces cakiness

Re: Setting Powder before a full face?

I personally don't recommend it. can make a look look cake really quickly

I think you will have way better success with a mattifyin...

I think you will have way better success with a mattifying primer and/or moisturizer and saving setting powder for the end. Cover FX makes a few really good mattifying products (in the green bottles). There are quite a few primers out there, and the GlamGlow matte moisturizer works for a lot of folks.

Re: Setting Powder before a full face?

@ItsBree  this did not work for me.  I wonder if I was doomed regardless because I wasn't using the right primer, foundation--and everything else (night routine, moisturizer, etc).  To begin with,  I thought I was level-10 oily, only to find out that I actually have "dehydrated" skin--kudos to Sephora reps for gauging my skin type with that machine they have. Anyway, this was not effective for me.
