Worst birthday gift ever!

So the other day I went to Sephora to pick up a few essentials but was especially excited to pick up my birthday gift! I always look forward to these treats as who doesn’t like to feel special around their birthday?! This years gift is a dual from Tarte-an Amazonian clay 12 hour blush in paaarty and tarrteist creamy matte lip paint in birthday suit. Upon receiving the gift, I wondered if the shades would match my skin tone but was not given any other option so I just went about my day. The verynext day I tried on the lip stick and wow! I looked like a clown! I havenothing bad to say about Tarte however, the color choice for a universal birthday gift is absolutely foul! I am black and this lip color is notfor anyone dark skinned. I do experiment with color and can sometimes be bold but this is just ridiculous! My lips looked terrible- I facetimed my sister who said I looked like a crack addict! Sephora, this is a complete fail! Lipsticks look different on everyone and its quiteinsulting that you picked a shade that would flatter people of a lighter complexion. Why not gift something that fits everyone- no matter their skin tone- skincare products, mascara, nail polish, anything that makes us all feel accepted? I am soo disappointed that not enough thought was put into this. Thanks for the gift- it is now in the garbage

RE: Worst birthday gift ever!

They did have a skin care set. I was able to get one only cause I missed getting mine in my birthday month and they sent me an email saying I could get the skincare set. They might have run out of the set cause I was just in store and it looked like they only have the tarte set left which sucks for people with birthdays later in the year. Maybe they should do what Ulta does and they have a different gift every four months. This way they have enough for everyone.

I 100% agree on this, and honestly whenever there is a lipstick in the birthday gift it's usually a pink/peachy "nude" colour doesn't seem like they ever really try to mix it up, a red or a plum would be a nice change that could potentially suit more people!

Re: RE: Worst birthday gift ever!

It wasnt nude om me- more like peachy and ashy.

I know it was free and I am not expecting the world..i’m just asking that they put more thought into who the gift is meant for because obviously its not for darker complexions...I didnt know there were 2 options until this post. I was not given an option in the store.

Re: RE: Worst birthday gift ever!

i actually think having colour options available for different skin tones is a great idea.   surely 3 basic options - light, medium, deep - can't be that hard

Re: RE: Worst birthday gift ever!

my guess is that by the time your birthday came around your store had run out of the other option.  hopefully next year you get an option!

Omg same thing happened to me.. That's what I got in my birthday month and I hated that lip gloss color.. And it was even hard to get off! I am light skinned but even on me it looked so bad!!

@LisLen The word is GIFT as in FREE to you compliments of Sephora and their vendors. I'm sorry that you did not like the Tarte gift but that is why there is a selection of two; one skincare and one cosmetic.

Re: @LisLen The word is GIFT as in FREE to you compliments of...

I understand its a gift but my point is- it should be inclusive of everyone..don’t give me something that makes me feel there was no consideration of people with darker tones...though this thought is extreme, imagine you recieved a brown foundation..wouldn't you feel left out as that obviously was not meant for you?

I had no idea there were 2 options- I was not given a choice. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll know for next year.

Have a lovely day 🙂
