Incredibly weak nails

I have incredibly weak nails that peel (because they are so thin). I've tried biotin and it didn't help. Even during pregnancy the prenatal vitamins (which some say help) did nothing. Does anyone have recommendations on a treatment or strengthener that might help?

NAIL OIL!!!! I had the same problem too, but I was told to use nail oil 3 times a day at the least! Use any brand you want as long as it has Jajoba oil in it; this oil soaks in to your nailbed easiest. And if you want to save money, you can make your own with an empty nail polish bottle, a bottle of Jajoba oil, and a bottle of Vitamin E 😊 Hope this helps!

I have been doing nails for almost 10 years and totally know what you're talking about. I have the same issues with my nails but I just keep enhancements on them. The best product line that I have come across for this problem is honestly Sally Hansen hard as nails. Apply a thin coat every couple days, without removing the previous polish. Also when you do have length on your nails be sure to have them more rounded then square, it makes a big difference with weak nails. If you are a super fan of the square nails just round the corners off, also make sure that when you file your nails it isn't a low grit file, pretty much make sure it isn't super gritty. Hope this helps a little bit.

Re: Incredibly weak nails

It depends on the person, and take everything I say as opinion...

I don't think I have extremely weak nails, but mine also flake and split on a regular basis.  Besides different nail polish I use, here's a list of products I use to keep my nails from breaking:

  • Jojoba Oil:  This has a low viscosity, high absorption, and the composition of this oil is the most similar to our own oils.  Almost all of your cuticle oils you find will have it in there.  I usually just find a large bottle of it and an empty dropper bottle and carry that around with me.
  • Top Coat/Gel Top Coat: Try to find something higher quality or a Gel Top Coat that is compatible with your nail polish/gel polish.  It will keep your nail polish for chipping and add strength to your nail while it grows underneath.
  • File: I don't buff my nails, but I file my nails every other week to make sure that anything hanging/uneven/or something I know I won't leave alone is shaved down.  A good file job will keep your nails from snagging.
  • Daily Multi: I used to work in a Natural Health Store for 5 years, so this I know very well.  Biotin does not help if you are not taking a multi or, at the very least, a B-Complex. If you want to take additional vitamins to support Hair/Skin/Nails that's fine, but you have to do the additional diet/supplements otherwise it's a huge waste of $.  B-Complex will have all B Vitamins (including Biotin) in the product, because B Vitamins work best together.  Multi Vitamins come standard with a B Complex in them.

TL;DR What works, for me, is always having my nails painted and applying cuticle oil.

I personally used to use the Nail Aid nail strengthener that you can purchase at your local drug store. But use the strenghteners as a temporary fix because if your nails become too hard and not flexible they are prone to breaking if you were to hit it on an object.. While you have the nail aid on you can put nail polish on top of it as well to add some color to your day :). I would also suggest possibly investing in a cuticle balm (I use the burts bees lemon butter cuticle cream. Love that stuff and its around $6) and even a cuticle oil ( I had an avocado cuticle nail oil that was in a green bottle from a local Sallys beauty supply store, but now I use simply pure cuticle oil from Bliss Kiss which is an online brand for around $17). Applying the cuticle oil and balm will help give back flexibility to your nails so if under pressure they won't break 🙂

Re: Incredibly weak nails

I used Hard Rock from Deborah Lippmann - I swear it makes my nails stronger.
