Sephora Six: Back to Basics

I love a full glam face, but let's be honest, I'm not whipping that out everyday 😅

Also, kind of wanted a think tank, because there's been uptick in new to makeup posts... I loved @PDXXXX responses to a few of them

Might be helpful to give six (because that's the theme, but y'know y'all can cheat be creative with that number) products and also list

Skin type

Fave feature to play up

Tools of choice

Example

...

For myself:

Oily Combo Skin

Eyes or lips

Brushes, fingers

Foundation: DIOR Forever Glow Star Filter Multi-Use Complexion Enhancing Booster or Ami Colé Skin-Enhancing Lightweight & Blurring Foundation Stick

Eyes: Danessa Myricks Beauty Linework Paintbrush Fluid Liquid Eyeliner 0.034 oz / 1 ml

Lip: I'll go 90s liner and gloss or deeeeep

DIOR Rouge Dior Contour No-Transfer Lip Liner Pencil (Diormidnight) CLINIQUE Pop Plush™ Creamy Lip Gloss Black Honey Pop 🤌🏽🤌🏽

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz® Ultra-Slim Precision Eyebrow Pencil Medium Brown for brows

Setting Spray: Skindinavia or ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Preserve the Serve Luminous Setting Spray 4 oz/ 118 mL (there's a jumbo out now 😲)

I'll usually do my brows while I'm doing my skincare because I look unfinished without them 😅, the Danessa liner I love because I can go so thin, and my lashes are straight, so it gives the illusion of mascara and I can do a little flick to emphasize my eye shape

The Star filter gives a glow and coverage, and the Ami stick is fast.  I like applying from the back of my hand with dots to the face and then buffing out with a brush.  Then I'll hit it with some setting spray.

The lip, I contour a bit, with thickest lines at the edges, and then it's buffed out inward for a nice ombre look.  Then gloss.  If I'm not feeling up to it, gloss just goes on or I'll use CLINIQUE Almost Lipstick Black Honey instead

When I'm done, another hit of spray.

...

You can include your skincare routine if you like, which gives you another six, but emphasize how you prep for makeup vs general routine, if you can

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

My 6 (whoops 7) product look. Thank you to @danielledanielle for another challenge, this one really helped me hone in on which of the palettes I have is the most versatile for my personal goals!

1. First, my skin type: mature, sensitive, dry as the Sahara desert and red prone w/texture from cystic acne when I was younger,

2. Favorite feature: I tend to focus on one feature at a time and it's usually my eyes or cheeks,

3. Application tools? I love anything that blends well with fingers, brushes galore but also am getting back into using my Beauty Blender.

B/c my skin has been a hot, dry, red, reactive mess lately I want to mention the morning skin care products I used to prep here that are helping me repair my skin barrier and are staples in my over 40 routine:

1. Paula's Choice Sensitive Cleanser,

2. Paula's Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster for Redness Relief 1 oz/ 30 mL  ,

3. Avene Tolerance Soothing Moisturizer,

4. ALPYN Instant Bright Eye Dark Circle Firming Cream with Niacinamide & Peptides 0.5 oz / 15 mL  ,

5. Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Moisture Repair Balm Serum with Hyaluronic Acid and Squalane 1.41 oz / 40 g ,

6. Flonase. Seriously. I've got some darned puffy eyes and allergies so this is really a big part of how I reduce the red, puffy eyes I have, and cheating with 7 here...

7. Paula's Choice Hyarulanic + Peptides Lip Booster which I often wear alone as it enhances my lip color and has a glossy finish.

On to the next, my 6 (darn, 7) for this look:

1. Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Soothing Serum Skin Tint Foundation with Peptides + Ceramides 2  applied with my fingers to even out my skin color and redness,

2. Fenty Beauty by Rihanna We're Even Hydrating Longwear Waterproof Concealer Light 110W  applied to undereyes, around the nose, the chin and forehead and blended in with a beauty blender.

3. MAKEUP BY MARIO Softsculpt® Multi-Use Bronzing & Shaping Serum with Hyaluronic Acid  applied for a light contour under cheekbones applied using wand end along hairline and under jaw blended in with a Sephora contour brush,

4. PATRICK TA Major Brow Defining Pencil  (I actually ran out of it using it this time and do plan on repurchasing) as my brows are in a crazy growing in stage and also turning white),

5. HUDA BEAUTY Easy Bake and Snatch Pressed Talc-Free Brightening and Setting Powder Poundcake  applied with a powder brush and finally,

6. tarte Tartelette™ In Bloom Clay Eyeshadow Palette 12 x 0.053 oz/ 1.5 g using Charmer and Flower Child as an eye base, Jetsetter in the crease, Funny Girl blended from my mid to inner eyes and Activist as a liner; Sweetheart as a blush and then Funny Girl once more as a highlighter. And once again cheating with,

7. Grande Cosmetics GrandeLIPS Hydrating Lip Plumper Gloss  in Nude attempting to bring down the color of my rather pigmented lips. Total waste of time, should've just let it ride and left on the Paula's Choice lip product as the nude didn't cancel out my lip shade much and the Paula's has a rather glossing effect (which is not to say I don't think the Grande Gloss is a bad product in the least).

I was on the fence about showing a picture of my face post skin care but before makeup. But also know I was driven to learn everything I could about makeup through my skin care battles with cystic acne, uneven texture, discoloration, dryness and sensitivity (the skin around my lips was flaking off and hurt around my mouth before using this skin care lineup). And I want people with similar challenges to find products that can help them feel the most confident they can. So (deep breath) here is a picture after applying the products listed in my skincare, followed by the final result taken in the same room/same lighting and unfiltered about 30 minutes later:

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@PDXXXX great look! It looks perfect on you.

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@PDXXXX  love your before and after photos, you look lovely in both! Finding skincare products that work for your specific skin is such a journey, I'm glad you've found some that work well for you. 💜

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@caitbird thank you! Yes, it is indeed an ongoing journey, lol. Still searching a bit but have found some products that are helping so fingers crossed!

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

You are absolutely lovely in both these photos @PDXXXX 💕

I love this before and after. Yummy skin tint gives a little more coverages than we might expect from something labeled tint, but it's does behave more like a medium coverage foundation but somehow feels so much lighter.

Aah I get those white brow hairs too. I started using a coloured brow gel over my penciled in brows when I feel like they need some extra camouflage. 😉

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@CynthieLu you're making me realize I've always treated brow pencil vs tints as an either/or proposition - thank you for helping with what should have been obvious and your kind words! I'm going to get on that! Take that white brows, lmao.

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

This is stunning @PDXXXX .  Thank you for posting and the walkthrough.  I know someone will find this helpful.

I totally see six products and not 7, Flonase is essentially your wellness and you nixed the lip plumper. 😉

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

I am loving your mathing @danielledanielle 😉 This was a really good one where excepting my base products I ended up using a palette I'm normally not reaching for. It also made me realize I don't *really* need mascara if I'm on limited time and effort. Now I need to try to get this nailed down to 6 of my favorite products I do really reach for!

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

Let's play! Thank you for creating this thread @danielledanielle reading what everyone uses in thier routines is always something I enjoy reading about, anyone else? It's so interesting! 😄

For myself...

Skin type: Dry 🏜

Fave feature to play up: -The tip of my nose with a highlight, absolute fav right now. ( Tapping the creamy highlight from PATRICK TA Major Glow Crème & Powder Light Reflecting Translucent Highlighter Duo Sugar works beautifully)

Tools of choice: Sephora Pro Collection Brushes! 🖌️

( SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Eyeliner Brush #22  is my favorite brush of all time)

The Six:

1) Foundation/Base: My everyday go to base is Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Soothing Serum Skin Tint Foundation with Peptides + Ceramides 4  . It works so well with my dry skin.

2) Brows: I get a huge confidence boost when I take the time to draw/full mine in. I absolutely love Benefit Cosmetics Precisely, My Brow Pencil Waterproof Eyebrow Definer Shade 3

3) Lipstick: My favorite lipsticks are Tom Ford's bullets. They don't dry my lips or at all. Shades like TOM FORD Lip Color Lipstick West Coast  I can enjoy as a beautiful everyday color.

4) SPF: I have two that I am enjoying. One is a little pricey but it feels really good to wear. I don't like SPF's that feel too heavy on my skin. Tatcha The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50 Weightless Mineral Sunscreen 1.7 oz / 50 mL

And im also enjoying Dr. Jart+ Cicapair ™ Tiger Grass Camo Drops Color Corrector SPF 35 1 oz / 30 mL  . I feel like I can skip my base wearing this, and that's a time saver.

5) A Brown Mascara. I love those for a softer everyday look.

I use Clarins 4D brow in shade Brown. I think it's a really nice softer touch. 👌

And 🥁 🥁

6) Hour Glass Ambient Light Bronzer. Just that little something extra to bring a something special to a simple look.  Hourglass Ambient® Lighting Bronzer   I have a few singles and the ones that come in the holiday face palettes. ( Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit Unlocked Palette Evil Eye 😍 ) I use it by contouring my chin, and cheeks maybe a little around my nose too.

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@CynthieLu  I totally agree, I love reading about everyone's routines and favorite products, so this thread is super fun and interesting! Love your product picks, and you look fabulous as always!

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

We're about to get a second vote in for the Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Soothing Serum Skin Tint Foundation with Peptides + Ceramides  here when I post mine, lol. I'm so glad you showed the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit Unlocked Palette Evil Eye and Hourglass Mini Ambient Lighting Bronzer  - I just decided to get the palette as well and have been curious about more of there products. You always look so fresh faced and lovely. That lip color looks so perfect on you!

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

Thank you 💕 I enjoy seeing the yummy skin tint get some well deserved love. It's a stand out product imo. I can't wait to see what else you put together for your 6 @PDXXXX  😄

Oooh I hope you love the Hourglass palette. Was it Evil Eye you picked? I like the added warmth I get from it, especially headed into the cooler months. Maybe it will help remind us of sunshine and warmer times, lol.  Winter is coming ❄️😭

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

A good brow definitely helps boost my confidence too @CynthieLu

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

Right? It's like a little finishing touch that makes such a difference @lmaster. 😄

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

It's a necessity for the over threaded 🙋🏽‍♀️ @CynthieLu @lmaster

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

And over plucked 🫣 @danielledanielle

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

Ooooh yes ok @danielledanielle love this!! Thanks for the tag - the BIC is being nice and allowing me to actually login and post!!

let’s start with the basics;

Skin type - dry combo. Used to be oily combo, but something about crossing 30 changed that haha

Favourite feature to play up - I want to say lips because I almost never leave the house without something on them, but possibly eyes. Not in an eyeshadow way, but BIG lashes. Always been a fan of a dramatic lash look (except my falsies are not getting as much love these days)

tools of choice - fingers or sponge/puff

ill post about my top 6 later when i have a chance to think about it!! I’ve recently done a shakeup of some of my regular daily products 😌

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

Looking forward to it! @cianni

You have gorgeous eyes, so it's kind of natural to do that,  but on the other hand ...

I remember a no makeup class where they said play up one feature, like you're Destiny's Child and only one thing/feature is Beyonce.  I remember saying to myself, "but what if I'm always Beyonce 🤔😂🤷🏽‍♀️"

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@danielledanielle thanks for the tag! Most of the time I'm an all or nothing type when it comes to makeup (cue me being late ---) but I'll try to narrow it down. I also have a hard time narrowing down products because I try to make an effort in cycling through what I own so nothing gets neglected.

I have pretty normal skin but live in the desert so I do lots of moisturizing skincare to avoid looking like the crypt keeper.

I love eyeshadow but lately I've been focusing more on complexion.

I'm a brush girl but don't mind using my fingers.

My latest go-to's are

  1. Cushion Foundation - the Jung Saem Mool Essential Skin Nuder Cushion is my favorite but I rotate through a few others from K-beauty brands). I usually use the included puff but will occasionally finish off with a dense foundation brush.
  2. Concealer - I usually apply a corrector to help out my dark circles but if the tone is right, I can stick to just concealer. I really enjoy the Tower 28 Beauty Swipe All-Over Hydrating Serum Concealer  as well as the NATASHA DENONA Hy-Glam Brightening & Hydrating Medium to Full Coverage Crease Proof Serum Concealer P2  , among others
  3. Cream or liquid Blush - these are still high on my use list. I have so many from various brands that I try to rotate through them consistently. The Rose Inc blushes recently made it back into rotation and I still love them. Other loves are the Fwee blush pots, WA blush sticks, and PATRICK TA Major Headlines Double-Take Crème & Powder Blush Duo
  4. Cream or liquid Bronzer - recent favorites are the MERIT Bronze Balm Sheer Sculpting Bronzer  , Saie Dew Bronze Soft-Focus Sculpting Liquid Bronzer Sand  , and the Mario liquid one, among others. So many great formulas out these days!
  5. Eyeshadow - ND palettes. If I'm in a rush, I'll pick one of ND's more neutral palettes and use a light-medium shade that matches my blush tone on my lid and crease and then top it off with a sparkle shade. NATASHA DENONA I Need a Warm Eyeshadow Palette   NATASHA DENONA I Need a Nude Eyeshadow Palette  and NATASHA DENONA Golden Eyeshadow Palette  have been recent go-to's.
  6. Brows - If I don't have time to throw on a pencil, I will use a fiber brow gel all over and try to fill them in and fix them up as best as I can in a hurry. It's not as neat but it works. Urban Decay Big Bush Volumizing Tinted Brow Gel Blackout  is my current one as well as one by NYX.

I always need to finish up with mascara but half of the time I'm rushing and don't want to slow down enough to apply it properly. I have one that lives in my bag in case I have time to apply it in the car (usually not). My lippie ends up being whatever is currently in my bag, usually a tinted lip oil or squeeze tinted lip mask/balm.

This pictures is from the other day. Ignore the liner and mascara and you've got my daily look. There might be some brow pencil in there too 😉
