Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

I just found out I'll be moving across the Pacific to Seoul for work in about a month.  O.M.G. My first fear is moving my entire makeup collection.  Lols. Priorities. So many questions...........What do I do?!! What's the best way to pack everything up to prevent minimal damage? I'll be having professional movers packing everything up and shipping it for me....should I pack my collection myself?  Any advice is much much appreciated!

@angelKiss24 When I travel, I also like to put everything in Lock-and-Lock containers.  So, if something spills, it's not supposed to be able to leak from the container onto your things.  Good luck with the move, your job and your new life!!!

Thanks @greeneyedgirl107! It's nerve racking as heck!  Such a huge change,  but I can't wait!!

Re: Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

I've done this before. Fastest and most secure way that worked was wrapping each item in bubblewrap and vacuumsealing them in foodsaver bags. Before that I scotchtaped bottle tops but still had spills. Avoid sending your collection by moving company/courier if possible unless you trust the company. If you decide to ship them, make sure you have enough cushion for all of them, esp palettes. Have a fun and safe stay in Seoul!

Congrats!  Asia is very exciting!!!!

What exactly are you packing?

Things that spill, open them up and put some plastic (can be any, but I find the plastic bags from the produce section do the job)  then close them back up.

Your make-up can be wrapped in bubble wrap to keep from cracking.

Then just pack in your suitcase using towels as thick padding.  Either carry this on the plane with you or check-in.  Don't ship this kind of stuff as freight shipping is usually not climate controlled.

If something is most likely to spill or break......just leave it at home.

Plenty of shopping in Asia!!!  whoooo!!!

Re: Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

@Anonymous, no crates for my move... just boxes.  Now I'm going to have to seriously look at my collection and reconsider what to put in my checked luggage vs freight.  I hadn't even thought about climate control and such.......

I'd love to leave some of my stuff here,  but I won't have a home in the US for the next 2 years.  Maybe I can look into leaving some items with the parents....

Thanks so much for your inputs! I can't wait to go shopping over there!! 😂

Re: Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

2 years is a long time!!! What an awesome adventure!!! Excited for you @angelKiss24

Yea, make-up items/liquids can get kinda gross in non-climate control freight shipping. Carry these items with you.

I would also think about items that are not easily found in Korea that you can't live without!

For me, it was just a few things.  Quality deodorant (I guess bc the laws are different on ingredients per country), good floss (floss is a hard one to find and expensive when you do!) and essential oils. Supplements if you take these. Quality manicure kit is a must!

No need to take a bunch!  Your parents can ship you care packages of 'home' goodies as needed!

I never had problems finding good female products or even platinum blond hair dye while traveling! I They sell blond L'oreal hair dye in every Asian country!  Watson's is still my favorite store overseas.

Just remember you can buy almost everything else in Korea!

I am getting more excited for you.  Pack me!!!! ;') lol!

Re: Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

It depends on the exact type of lid, but for many liquid products you can cut the fingers off of disposable powder free gloves or those single finger ones and put them over the hole in the top of the bottle, rubber band the bottom or tape as the space allows for(sometimes neither works, you have to play around with it, and then twist the lid back on being careful so the glove finger doesn't tear. I've transported my inks that way in the past.

Re: Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

What a genius idea!! I'm going to buy gloves and do this for all my bottles.  Thank you! @liv545

Re: Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

You are most welcome @angelKiss24 !!! It's saved me a lot of messy situations!!

Re: Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

Put cotton in your powder compacts so it cushions it. You can also take this chance to throw out some old stuff that needs to be replaced anyways. Tape caps shuts so nothing leaks; groups your backups by category, but take all your daily essentials in one bag so it is all in one place.

Re: Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

Group like items, cotton in all compacts, taping lids shut for liquids (and then cover it with glove finger tips)...all going on my to-do list. Thanks @weeeeweeeeeee!

Re: Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

I would personally pack the makeup myself just so you have piece of mind that it was packed as well as you would like. I would use bubble wrap and maybe even use packing peanuts for powder items that could potentially shatter. I would also consider separating products by type. Like all dry powder products together, all liquids together, ou get the idea. And for liquids I would ziploc bag products so if anyone were to leak it likely would remain contained to its bag and not wreck anything else or weaken the integrity of the box its packed in!

Good luck with your move 🙂

Re: Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

I'm thinking of wrapping everything and placing them back in my makeup drawers and having the movers wrap my makeup drawers as well...i don't think there's such a thing as "over-kill" for makeup transit safety.  😅  adding Ziploc bags to the list.  Thanks @myxducky!

Re: Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

As my experiences, I would wrap them in thick layers of plastic food wrappers then I put in bubbles wrapper and ziplock bags. Surrounding makeup will be clothes. Very limited liquid like makeup sprays, perfume and makeup remover on the plane. Everything should be sealed carefully. 😸

Re: Moving Makeup Collection Internationally!!

My main concern really is all the stuff that will be packed and moved by movers.  My travel makeup and skincare will be minimal as I don't want to risk losing things in transit. Thanks for the advice on double and triple wrapping!  @Anonymous
