As a beginner what makeup brushes would you recommend?
@Farisha I love the Sephora collection pro brushes. These are a few of my favorites. SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Powder Brush #50
SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Blush Brush #99
SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Contour Brush #78
SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Bronzer Brush #80
SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Shadow Brush #14
@Farisha for a beginner, e.l.f. and Real Techniques both make very inexpensive but still good quality brushes. Sigma Beauty brushes are a bit more, but not too expensive, and I have noticed that the brand has sales very frequently, so if you decide to get some Sigma brushes I'd definitely recommend getting them on sale.
Do you have any makeup brushes already? And do you know what kind of makeup (looks, techniques, products) you like to do or are interested in trying? If you already have some brushes and/or you know what makeup needs you have, you may be able to narrow down your focus a bit for what brushes you'll want to add to your collection. Or if you're just starting out and you just want enough brushes that will cover all the basics, I would recommend maybe getting a face brush set and an eye brush set, for example. Once you've gotten some basics and played around with them you'll be better able to know what you might still need and can add individual brushes from there.
Hope that helps, and good luck! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
As a beginner, I probably wouldn't lay out a ton of money because once you step into the water with makeup brushes, there's no turning back, lol. If you are a beginner, I would recommend a reasonably priced set. My recommendations:
1. BDellium Tools: I love these brushes. Very reasonably priced, decent quality brushes that with reasonable care will last you years. I have 3 sets of BDelliums that I still use to this day. They have a set for every preference, natural bristle, synthetic, etc. etc.
When you create an account you get 20% off your first purchase. Love these brushes(no, I do not work for this company, lol).
Royal and Langnickel makes some really nice affordable and durable sets for someone starting out as well.
Again, if you create an account you get 20% off(and no I don't work for this company either, lol).
I think what's important here is you get a set that covers all of the basics: Eyes, complexion, lips, made with the right materials for the application. In essence, synthetic for creams and liquid application and natural bristle for powder product application. Synthetic(unless you are strongly against using natural bristle(not judging anyone if they prefer all synthetic), is not optimal for all types of makeup application. The only brushes that I have come across that are all synthetic that perform just as well as natural bristle are a series made by Kevin James Bennett and Royal and Langnickel. I do not believe they make these brushes anymore. 😞 Thankfully I bought the collection. That said, the reason natural bristle is optimal for powder products is because natural bristle consists of the cuticle, cortex, and medulla. Natural bristle has a porosity that allows them to pick up and release more powder products(eyeshadow, blush, face powder, etc). Synthetic bristles do not have the same composition which makes them great for liquid products(liquids, creams, etc.) With synthetic, you will get a better deposit of product with the aforementioned types of products because synthetic fibers do not have the cuticle, cortex and medulla. Again, you want to get a set with both types of material for optimal application.
I have seen Morphe mentioned a lot. I'm not a fan of these brushes. Lot's of people love them, and I can understand why. They are cost effective and easily accessible. That said, you get what you pay for, and IMHO, they are not well constructed brushes. Just my opinion.... I've been a professional MUA for 11 years and I still have my BDellium brushes. Minimal investment, dependable, and good quality for the price. Good luck on your makeup brush journey.:)
I love my Sephora Pro Collection brushes @Farisha
They are very soft and plush. They go on sale a few times too throughout the year 😊 so you can even get them at a good deal.
I do have a bunch from E.L.F and Morphe and they do great if you don't want to invest to much money in your brushes right now.
@Farisha @I actually think it’s worth it when you can get it on sale. I have the eye and face set.
@CynthieLutagging so you can respond, too
Pro brushes - depends a lot on product choice. There's usually a description and suggestion for each brush, and some of them can be multi-use.
SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Foundation Brush #64- I use it for foundation, kind of like a stippling brush, so instead of buffing, just stipple/dabbing in. Really great for underpainting.
SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Foundation Brush #47- multi-tasker. Works well with foundation, unless it's a very thin one, you may have streaks. Great at contouring and recently started using mine for cream blushes as well.
SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Blush Brush #99- great for creams, especially precise application of cream blush
SEPHORA COLLECTION Makeup Match Foundation Brush - Kind of Kabuki like, good for buffing in foundation
SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Crease Brush #19- One of my fave crease brushes, can blender creams and powders well and serve as a precise contour.
SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Concealer Brush #57- Great at diffusing thick concealers. Also can be used for precision highlighting.
SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Powder Brush #50 + #50.5 Brush Duo Set- You get the full size and a travel size. I like this one for finishing powders.
SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Concealer Brush #71- the concealer version of number 47
I also like Sigma Beauty brushes. They run a lot of sales, and they have a range of shapes. I have a small lid, so Sigma was a major find for me early on because I could find all sorts of brushes to help define my crease. They also used to make one of my favorite highlighter brushes, The tapered highlight, but it's discontinued. I am sure they have a good alternative, just wouldn't be able to tell you.
I also agree on the e.lf. brushes. There's c-shaped eyeshadow brush they make that I love for the ficklest of shimmers and they have great little smudge and detail brushes.
Thank you @danielledanielle for the tag 🙏
My angled eyeliner brush by E.L.F is my work horse for doing my eyeliner. I like to use it with powder
For more precise detail I use SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Eyeliner Brush #22
My basic kit for my eyes is The Morphe More the Merrier Eye set, it's got a good variety of brushes for different looks. 😃
@danielledanielle mentioned really great points, the brushes do all mostly come with descriptions and usage suggestions when you look them up.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask and use the @ key and type the persons name to tag them, so they don't miss your response.
I have a few eye and face brushes from the pro collection. I got a SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO 8 Piece Brush Set once and added a few to my collection over time.
What brushes and types most interest you? Do you have any already or are looking for your first set?
@Farisha @I use a variety of brushes that I have collected over the last 13 years.
MAC brushes 239, 217, 227 are staples
Tom Ford bronzer and blush brush
Morphe x Makeup by Ariel brush sets
Sonia G brush sets. She has a bunch to choose from. I have the Lotus, sky eye set, and Hinoki.
