How to Disinfect Brushes, eyeshadow?

Hey everyone,

I just got an eye infection and want to clean, but more importantly disinfect my brushes and eyeshadows just incase. I currently have the following products, but how would you disinfect your products??

  1. MAC Brush Cleaner
  2. Isopropyl Alcohol
  3. Solid Beauty Blender Cleaner

Thanks in advance

Re: How to Disinfect Brushes, eyeshadow?

I use the Elf brush cleaner. The alcohol may effect your brushes in the long run. I have had eye issues before and they where caused by a eyeliner that didn't agree with my eye, and also eyeliner tgat clogged the little pores on my water line and caused stye like conditions that I had to get treated. Maybe with shadows buy the alcohol wipes and wipe them down well that way you dont sacrifice all your products.

Re: How to Disinfect Brushes, eyeshadow?

I would proceed with caution with using these after having an eye infection. Do you know if it was viral or bacterial? My suggestion is to absolutely disinfect with isopropyl alcohol - dip the brushes for a 20-30 second count, but be careful not to soak up to the handle as it could damage the glue. Regarding the other makeup items... I would honestly suggest replacing them. Under normal circumstances the other suggestions are great, but eye infections are generally highly contagious.

IMHO, TL;DR - Use whatever method to clean, then use Isopropyl Alcohol to disinfect.

Thanks, @amayaiskawaii. Can you use Isopropyl Alcohol on both synthetic and real hair brushes? Sadly I think you might be right about throwing away some stuff, luckily I have only worn mascara and eyeliner this week so its easier to throw away then a palette.

Re: How to Disinfect Brushes, eyeshadow?

You can definitely use it on synthetic - although it may affect the color of the bristles if it's a colored brush (i.e.: those beautiful unicorn/mermaid/insert magical creature themed brushes). With natural brushes, it may cause more damage/breakage to the bristles due to the drying out.

It really sucks, but just take precaution with everything. I'm glad you don't have to throw out any palettes too!!

RE: How to Disinfect Brushes, eyeshadow?

@Aaliaa for daily cleaning, I use Cinema Secrets. Pour a little bit into a small bowl or shot glass (if you have one). Swirl your brush in it then clean it off on a paper towel. It’s great for cleaning/disinfecting. I mostly do it when I want to use the same brush in two opposite shades. It dries immediately! I then do my usual deep clean with me Dr Bronners bar soap and ELF brush mat every Thursday.

Thanks @darlyndar, always a reliable response!! I just used up a cinema secrets brush cleaner and found the MAC one works the same, but its cheaper. Also love the idea of a shot glass, put them to better use!

Re: RE: How to Disinfect Brushes, eyeshadow?

@Aaliaa I loooove a great dupe! I have the giant bottle. When I run out, I’ll definitely check out the MAC one!!!

Re: RE: How to Disinfect Brushes, eyeshadow?

Hope you love it too!

Re: How to Disinfect Brushes, eyeshadow?

Idk about cleaning the actual product but when it comes to brushes make sure you clean them often if you use them a lot.. I used a paper plate with some dawn dish soap and olive oil. The soap will keep them germs away and the oil will keep them soft. For my beauty blender I use dove bar soap and then I use the beauty blender cleaner.. Hope this helps!

Re: How to Disinfect Brushes, eyeshadow?

Thanks, I do clean them regularly, I just want to clean them extra thoroughly to avoid spreading the infection.
