Re: Going Talc free !

@miraaah88  Talc is not bad or dangerous. Asbestos is. There’s been lots of buzz about talc being contaminated with asbestos during talc mining. In the US, the FDA has requested lots of testing to determine if talc is safe to use in cosmetics. If you search for “FDA talc safety,” you should find the FDA’s page containing all the test results and findings. The FDA still considers talc safe in cosmetics.

Of course, going talc-free is your personal choice. If you wanna do that, go for it. 🙂 I’m just pointing out that talc is not evil and has yet to be found dangerous as used in cosmetics in the US.

Re: Going Talc free !

@WinglessOne I appreciate that you summarized this so concisely.  It irritates me that talc has gotten so much bad publicity over the last year, especially, and I know that a lot of people rely on the TikTok version of the today's news where it's definitely being boycotted rather than actually seeking information from more reliable sources.

Re: Going Talc free !

@CookieGirl1  Yeah, it seems talc's back on people's "danger" list again, despite all the work that's been done to test for safety (specifically, testing for asbestos contamination) in cosmetics. Sigh... I hope talc doesn't go the way of parabens. Each time I hear folks complain that certain current preservatives are irritating, I think "well gosh, if only folks hadn't ignorantly demonized good ol' safe and super effective parabens, we wouldn't need those new preservatives."

I think what frustrates me most is that the FDA could spend more time and effort testing and approving updated UV filters for US sunscreens, especially since some folks are skin-sensitive to certain chemical UV filters (which are needed in sunscreens to photo-stabilize avobenzone, the US's only chemical UVA filter; nevermind all the newer UVA filters available in the rest of the world that are photostable on their own). But nooo, they're having to spend time calming people's fears about talc. I mean sure, products should be periodically tested for contaminants as a manner of quality control and safety. That should be a standard practice of brands and labs for all their products anyway. The FDA doesn't regulate cosmetics as drugs, so companies aren't regulatory-obligated to do all that testing themselves. This includes "clean beauty" and "all natural" brands.

Re: Going Talc free !

Thank you for the explanation @WinglessOne That was alot of really good information! And a lot to type out, thank you!

Now I want the deets on silicones in our skin and hair care 🙃😉

Re: Going Talc free !

@CynthieLu  Heh, that was the short version. 😂 There's a lot more info—actual science-based info from trustworthy sources (which absolutely do not include the EWG or any of those "clean vs. dirty" ingredient-checker apps)—out there about talc.

Regarding silicones: lots of info's out there about this, too. Off the top of my head, Lab Muffin (Dr. Michelle Wong) has done at least one (probably several) video and blog post on the topic. Heck, your primary care doc or a board certified dermatologist can dispel myths about silicone. 😉

Re: Going Talc free !

Thank you @WinglessOne I'm going to look into her videos, (like many,  I'm an unlucky soul without a doctor) I heard those rumors about silicones in our hair care being not optimal and I'm very curious to learn the facts.  I appreciate your consise straight forward-ness always , and your knowledge 🙂 thank you hunny!

Re: Going Talc free !

@CynthieLu piggybacking off @WinglessOne 's recommendation to watch some YouTube videos, you might also check out Abbey Yung's explanations.  She actually does a lot of haircare-dedicated content on her channel.

Re: Going Talc free !

Thank you @CookieGirl1 I appreciate that 🙏 I will for sure! I think it's so hard sometimes to weed thru information and misinformation. Skin care, or just the whole beauty industry really, is very tricky.  I usually do critically think and not follow the crowd etc.. but they get me sometimes 😮💨

Re: Going Talc free !

I found the video but the read the wordy version from thier site, very good read

Thank you! I know better than to believe everything I'm told by social but some of them really get into your head, thank you again lady!

Re: Going Talc free !

@CynthieLu  Psst: we're not allowed to post links to sites outside Sephora. 😉 That's why most of us post URLS more like this: labmuffin [dot] com /silicone-mythbusting-with-video

Michelle Wong (Lab Muffin) is a good skincare ingredients resource from a chemist's perspective. Two other good cosmetic chemist resources are Esther Olu (The Melanin Chemist) and Stephen Ko (KindofStephen). And there are several board certified dermatologists on YouTube, though you'll notice they don't all agree on various topics; such is the way with docs in general. Heck, my own derm disagrees with a few things stated by one very popular YouTube derm in particular. I don't follow YT derms, but I do check to see what they've said about certain things during my own study and research sessions, to corroborate or poke holes in my findings. Learning about skincare ingredients requires your critical thinking hat, especially with all the misinformation floating around the internet.

Re: Going Talc free !

Oooh okay I didn't realize that about links, thank you for that @WinglessOne  eeeep!

I appreciate the info again so much. I do have ptofessional people I follow on the YouTube that I enjoy the honest opinions of. When it comes to skin care, beauty ect.. especially when they go into the science that backs up thier reasoning. But they really just review basic stuff and brands. Going so deep into subjects, I'm so into that idea, the more you know the better and can help weave your way thru product claims ingredient lists etc.. AND most importantly misinformation.

Uuugh I extremely dislike misinformation (thou that's everywhere these days), and how tricky it can be
