Eye shadow palettes and expiration dates

I wanted to see what other ppl do when it comes time that your palettes “expire” I know most eye shadow palettes have the little expiration date jar and it is normally 6months, 12months, 18months, or 24months. I love make up and I use it a lot but I don’t use my palettes that much to where I will go through them in one year!?! I have a lot of palettes and most of them I have had for over a year..... are we suppose to throw them out and replace them every year? Like what is the damage it could do to your eyes if you keep it longer then what the recommended time is? This seems silly to expire that soon! Unless you use all your palettes every day and yea you finish it up fast. Would like to know what everyone does.

Re: Eye shadow palettes and expiration dates

Powder eye shadow palettes and other powder makeup products should be fine to keep and use after the expiration date they're marked with. PROVIDED THAT: you always use clean brushes to apply and if you're using other products with formulas and/or packaged in a manner that is more susceptible to contamination (think creams in jars) make sure to use these items in a manner that avoids cross contamination, and ALWAYS have clean hands.

Now, mascara might not have a funky smell yet, but if it's got sticky semi-dry clumps on most of the wand it's getting close to when it needs to be tossed out. Unless you are okay with risking pink eye, in which case I would have to be side eyeing your life choices. 😉

I agree with everything Veronika and GG, @Ashmedina11.

I hang on to my powder products (and even collect some older palettes).  If I haven't used a palette or eyeshadow in several months, I do usually sanitize it before using (with alcohol spray) and I make sure my brushes are clean. Obviously, if it looks moldy or smells weird, throw it out.

Makeup is expensive and it breaks my heart to hear about people throwing away $50 palettes after a year because of the expiration date.

@Ashmedina11  I agree with @GG84 the date doesn't bother me either. As long as you keep your brushes and your makeup clean powders should last a while. I have eye shadows that are over 10-15 years old... still look and smell ok I'll use it.

@Ashmedina11

To me, it's not like a mascara that's coming into close contact with your actual eye. The date doesn't bother me.
