Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

Hi! I'm super new to lip care outside of just slapping on some lip chap whenever I remember too 😅😂

I have super dry and sensitive lips all year around, and I'm really hoping to find some products and learn more about lip care routines.

I'm a college student in my early 20's, if that make a difference in product suggestion for lips (I'm honestly not sure lol), but also I don't have a huge budget, so any budget reccommendations are also very welcome (but if they're not, that's okay too, I'm mostly just looking to learn before I buy anything).

If you have any suggestions and/or personal experience to share, I'd supper appreciate!!

Cheers ❤️

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

@CalStrid  I really like Farmacy Honey Butter Beeswax Lip Balm 0.12 oz/ 3.4 g   and SEPHORA COLLECTION Lip Balm & Scrub

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

@CalStrid I personally adore the Tatcha The Kissu Lip Mask but it is a little more expensive.  If you're looking for something that's good but a little more "affordable" you might look at the Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25  or the Kopari Coconut Lip Glossy.

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

Hi. @CalStrid ! Right now I am using SEPHORA COLLECTION Clean Lip Balm & Scrub Rose .  I also like the mint flavored one too! And I received a Glossier lip balm from a subscription box.  I have never used any products from this brand before.  I like it.  I have used one from Vaseline lip balm before and I thought it really helped my chapped lips.  Now, at night I use LANEIGE Good Night Kit .  There are 2 in it but in the past I have just bought the berry one.  And I really use it every night faithfully.  It has managed to keep my lips soft even in winter.
Now, if I I’m out in the sun, like a beach

day I use a lip balm with spf.  I like Chapstick sport.  And I keep reapplying especially after swimming.

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

Omg I just got the rose lip scrub to try bc it's pretty affordable, so I'm really happy to hear it's been working for you!!

Thank you sm for the recommendations!

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

Oh good @CalStrid!  I hope it helps.

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

You should definitely try the treatment balm if you haven’t, it’s amazing.

LANEIGE Lip Treatment Balm 0.35 oz/ 10g LANEIGE Midnight Minis Lip Sleeping Mask Set

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

i have horribly dry lips that split constantly and what works for me is after washing my face, while still damp i coat a layer of thicker moisturizer on my lips and let it soak in, followed by cerave ointment. i’ve tried many lip masks and balms but nothing has worked like this, hope it helps you as well!

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

Ooo I learned something new from you guys @ineeesssss & @WinglessOne today! Will try putting on lip balm while my lips are damp next time! I have dry lips year-round so my lips thank you in advance!!

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

@Guessgal  I hope it helps your lips! I also had chronically dry lips until my dermatologist recommended always applying moisturizers (for face, body, and lips) to damp—but not soaking/dripping wet—skin. He also convinced me to stop over-exfoliating my lips, which helped a lot.

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

Hi @CalStrid ! For super dry lips, a petrolatum-based balm can work wonders. My personal favorite is plain ol' Aquaphor Ointment (not the one labeled/sold specifically as lip balm, though it's probably fine), but you mentioned your lips are also very sensitive. Aquaphor contains lanolin which is a great hydrating ingredient, but if your lips are sensitive to it then you should avoid this balm. Instead, consider CeraVe Healing Ointment; either the regular version in dark blue packaging or the "Baby" version in light blue packaging should work, since they're very similar. You can even use good ol' Vaseline or another brand of petroleum jelly, if you don't mind the texture.

Always apply balm to damp (with water, not saliva) lips. This helps seal in hydration instead of dryness.

My lip care routine looks like this:

Spoiler
Lipstick removal (whenever I wear lipstick) - usually I just wipe lipstick off with a wet reusable bamboo round. For stubborn lipsticks, I rub on some Vaseline, let it sit for 1-2 minutes, and then wipe my lips clean with a wet round.

Lip scrub (once every 2-4 weeks) - I have some terrycloth textured bamboo rounds and usually use them to manually exfoliate my lips. A terrycloth washcloth works just as well. But sometimes I do use a lip scrub, usually ColourPop Lippie Scrub or MAC Lip Scrubtious; I'm very slowly working through a Sephora-gifted jar of fresh Sugar Lip Polish Exfoliator  now. I don't often exfoliate more frequently than once or twice a month because it's easy to over-exfoliate lip skin.

Lip serum (each AM & PM) - not everyone needs this step, but my dry lips appreciate it. Unfortunately my favorite product for this (Glossier Bubblewrap) was discontinued, so I'm looking for a good replacement that delivers antioxidants and hydrators without any ingredients my skin hates. I've used Tatcha The Kissu Lip Mask as a balm/mask before and it wasn't moisturizing enough for me on its own. But now I trying it as a lip serum: apply a thin layer to damp skin, then apply Aquaphor over it.

Lip balm (each AM & PM) - Aquaphor Ointment. In the morning I use a thin layer. At night, I might use a thicker layer, especially if I know the heat/ac will kick on and off all night.

Sunscreen (each day my lips are exposed to sunlight) - the only sunscreen balm I like is Vanicream Lip Protectant/Sunscreen SPF 30. It's never moisturizing enough on its own (contains no petrolatum), so I apply it over Aquaphor. As diligent as I am about using sunscreen everywhere else on my body, I sometimes forget my lips. Some people use non-tinted face or body sunscreen on their lips, so if you have one you like, try that out. But lips do need UV protection.

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

@CalStrid I have been enjoying Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25  and First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Lip Therapy lately. Both are very soothing and gentle, and affordable. The Jack Black comes in a few flavors too, I use the Shea and Peppermint, plus I love it has SPF.

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

@CalStrid I love a lot of balms but in all honesty, the Too Faced Hangover Pillow Balm Ultra-Hydrating Lip Balm Original has been life saving on my lips. A little goes a long way and it really works on chapped and dry lips. Does have a bit of a cooling sensation as well but I find that it feels nice and refreshing and is not painful even on extremely dry/chapped lips. 🙂

Re: Lip care recommendations for dry lips?

@CalStrid For budget beauty, I rec Aquaphor Healing Ointment.
