Burning Lips!! Help!

Hey -- my lips burn a few times a day. Sometimes it's triggered by lip products and sometimes not.

But I am CONFUSED because lip products that used to soothe me now TRIGGER the burning -- even wonderful YSL Oil-In-Stick or Melted satin or Urban Decay.

Am I allergic to something? What's going on?

Re: Burning Lips!! Help!

I had the same issue years ago.  I love lipstick, but noticed that even with regular lip balms, they were cracked and bleeding/peeling.  My problem wasn't the lippies themselves...but the lack of SPF on them.  Since then I've put on a balm (usually Fresh Lip Treatments)that has SPF in them and use either La Mer Lip Balm or Dior's Crème de Rose at night.

The one time I used the red colored Bite mask, my lips burned, but the original one I didn't have a problem with.

In addition to everyone else's advice, I'd also suggest drinking more water. This seems like a little thing, but I've found that the first thing to suffer when I've dropped my water intake is my lips, making them more sensitive and within a day, flaking and getting sore. When this happens, I crank up my water intake and they resolve themselves within a day or two.

i think you should use Bite lip mask before using anything on your lips. It heals anything even bleeding lips

Re: Burning Lips!! Help!

Hey @EstherGrace

Ive had similar problems. I'm unsure what triggered it in the first place, but it's likely your lips are so raw/irritated/dry that basically anything will irritate it, including what you already use.

If you haven't tried the products nika mentioned below, def give it a shot, but I personally hate them both lol. I burned through the agave really quickly and it didn't help much while the fresh balms are really bad in my opinion (but they're highly rated).

Based on my experiences (I've tried 20+ low to high end balms), I would recommend staying away from anything with peppermint, even if it's only "scented" with it. Also, definitely stop using any other lip products, other than the helpful balms, until your lips heal. They're already unhappy, so you prob don't wanna stress them out even more lol. I personally like aerin rose balm and jack black shea butter version. Sometimes my lips still freak out and those 2 products stop working for a few days, but I still do think they're the best out of everything I've tried.

Re: Burning Lips!! Help!

Agreed with @pinyo

When my lips react to something and are irritated, it doesn't take much to make things worse. This was exactly the reason I stopped wearing regular lipsticks for over 6 months!

Whenever my lips are misbehaving, I will use oil-based moisturizers topped with an occlusive. My go-tos are 100% shea butter, Aquaphor and Vaseline.

I'm allergic to Bite products and Fresh Sugar balms make my lips flake really badly, so nowadays I tend to stay away from balms altogether.

Re: Burning Lips!! Help!

Thank you so much @pinyo!

Fresh products thankfully work great for me, but i'll consider the Jack Black one.

I will start reading ingredients more. Probably should do that since I am allergic to nut products 😛

Re: Burning Lips!! Help!

Hi EstherGrace,

I suppose it's possible that you're becoming irritated by products you've used before, this isn't entirely unprecedented! That said, I think this might be related to winter dryness. I feel like my lips are more sensitive in winter, but they're actually just dried out from the weather and they may have small cracks that aren't very visible. While the cracks aren't visible, it can definitely still sting when you apply certain lip products!

What I would suggest is just dropping the lipsticks for a short time and really focus on moisturizing your lips - try BITE's Agave Lip Balm or if you'd still like a touch of color Fresh's Sugar Lip Treatment.

Kindly,
Nika

Re: Burning Lips!! Help!

Thank you Nika!

The Agave lip balm and fresh lips help me a lot. I use them every day. I am just reluctant to give up lipstick but I have sooooo much burning that it is probably worth it.

Thanks!

Re: Burning Lips!! Help!

@EstherGrace

if you are currently using bite agave lip balm or lip mask, try stop using it.

I used to love the agave lip mask and is very effective on me.  But then don't know what really happened, i started having reaction every time i use it.

It burned my lips very badly.  As long as I stop using it, the burning will stop and eventually back to normal.  I know a lot of people also have issue with that.

Re: Burning Lips!! Help!

This happened to me too @SalBing 😞 My lips were fine when I started using Bite products, I had a few matte lip crayons and high pigment pencils, wore frequently for 2-3 months no problem. Got the LLLR lipsticks, Frozen Berry lipsticks, still no issues. Then I started using the Bite Agave lip mask near the end of summer, and shortly after was when I had my bad reaction. Even after I fully recovered and took a break from all cream lipsticks, my lips still can't handle ANY Bite products to this day. I will frequently get some texture on my top lip the next day after using a Bite product 😞

Very sad, because I loved Bite products!

Re: Burning Lips!! Help!

@SalBing the agave lip balm soothes the burning instead of causing it now, thankfully!

I wonder if I need to switch up the lipsticks i'm doing...
