I’m sorry. I meant the value of the sample sizes.
A quick question and I don’t know if it’s been asked, but what is the formula for determining the value of the sales?
You take the price of the full size (the largest one available, if there are multiple sizes) and divide it by the number of mL it contains, which gives you the price per mL. You then multiply that times the number of mL in the sample.
Out of curiosity @RGbrown, why take the largest size to calculate the unit price rather than the smallest? I like to think the samples would be even more expensive per unit because they are the smallest. 😊
Yep, companies typically charge a pretty hefty premium for travel sizes, with a greatly exaggerated $/mL(or oz) over a full size, but we're not trying to calculate a "retail" or "replacement" value on minis. Rather, the goal is to get as close to the cost of the actual contents in the sample, which means we are looking for the lowest $/mL the company is normally willing to sell it for .
For example:
Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair mask is normally available in 2, 8, and 32oz sizes
2oz is $12, net $6/oz
8oz is $36, net $4.50/oz
32oz is $115, net $3.60/oz
Yes, they have smaller containers, but they place a premium on the ease or convenience of the smaller sizes, and charge more per ounce. The value of a mini would be calculated at $3.60/oz, because that's the minimum value Briogeo places on that quantity. Even if they gave out a 2oz gwp, I'd calculate a product value of $7.20, not the $12 retail they charge for that size.
Does that help, or have I made it muddier? 🙂
