Hyaluronic Acid ALWAYS makes me break out

I'm just really curious how many people have this issue? I always use it on a damp face, but I always break out. It seems like that is the "It" ingredient in moisturizers and serums now. If you have the same issue, so you know of any great products without that ingredient? I'm almost 59, so I'm asking for advice on products for people with dry, sensitive, mature skin. Thanks!

Re: Hyaluronic Acid ALWAYS makes me break out

@thecatsmeow, I know people that are allergic to or are sensitive to hyaluronic acid. It makes it hard to find products at times because as you said, it's in so many skincare products. I have normal-to-dry mature skin (dry-to-very dry in fall and winter) with sensitivity to certain ingredients.

Here are some products (non sunscreen) I've found to be helpful at providing hydration to my skin and protecting it and that, to my knowledge, does not include hyaluronic acid. You should review ingredient lists to confirm and to make sure there are not other ingredients that your skin may not responde well to. Just a note, sodium hyaluronate is a derivative of hyaluronic acid that is often found in skincare products so you may need to review ingredient lists for that as well as other names or derivatives for hyaluronic acid. Also, you may want to confirm that with the brand as ingredients list change.

I've tried all of these products over time and they've performed well on my skin; the items in bold are the ones that are currently in my rotation. Some of these items are available in a mini size, which may be a good way to try out the product to see how your skin responds. If you have a local Sephora store near you that carry these brands / products (Curel is not available at Sephora), you might ask to get a sample of a few to try. If you're starting a new routine or trying out new products, my recommendation is to test one at a time, for a period of time - this will be helpful both in giving you a better idea of how a product works for you as well as if the product or ingredients in it work well with your skin and other products or whether you may be allergic to something in it.

Brands are having their holiday sales and some have sets of mini's/travel sized items so that might be a way to go about trying some products.

Re: Hyaluronic Acid ALWAYS makes me break out

@thecatsmeow if you're looking for something hydrating, look for products with beta glucan instead. Try the iUNIK Beta Glucan Power Moisture Serum, you can find it on iHerb. It's a Korean skincare brand. It has a small ingredient list without HA. Also, the moisture line from PyunkangYul (another K-beauty brand) seems to be HA free and it's a really soothing and moisturizing line overall. You can also look at the Paula's Choice website for products you are interested in / concerns, and they do a good job of breaking down their ingredient lists so you can verify if they have HA or not.

@makeitup305

Thank you for the suggestions.

Re: Hyaluronic Acid ALWAYS makes me break out

Hi, i don't completely know what you mean by you put it on a damp face cloth but that may be the problem. Damp things grow bacteria and if you are constantly using the towel with bacteria on your face, you will eventually break out. I recommend trying to find a product that has hyaluronic acid in it. Also wanted to let you know that you are not going through this alone, yes hyaluronic acid is an “it” ingredient but for people without sensitive skin. Here are some products that contain hyaluronic acid.

Cleanser - The INKEY List Hyaluronic Acid Cleanser 5 oz/ 150 mL

Moisturizer - Glow Recipe Plum Plump Refillable Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer

Hope this helps

Re: Hyaluronic Acid ALWAYS makes me break out

I'm also having a problem with hyluronic acid. I'm following what they say to apply but my face becomes even more dry.

Does anyone have suggestions for a product that won't dry out my skin?

Appreciate all replies😊

Re: Hyaluronic Acid ALWAYS makes me break out

@EmilyManaba

I think you read my post wrong. I use hyaluronic acid products on a damp FACE, which you are supposed to do. I cannot use hyaluronic acid because I break out, so I was looking for products without that ingredient in them.

Re: Hyaluronic Acid ALWAYS makes me break out

Hi. I'm also having this issue. Same age as you. Hyluronic acid just dries out my skin more? 🤔.

Thought this was the "go to" product.

Waiting for anyone's response

Re: Hyaluronic Acid ALWAYS makes me break out

I have been having the same problem with breakouts.  Also in 40's.  I think my problem is that my moisturizer, facewash and serum all have hyaluronic acid in them. I believe my face couldn't handle the overload of hyaluronic acid.  I am trying to minimize the products that contain it.  Maybe just have it in my moisturizer only.  It's a work in progress.
