Shade Match for Deeper Skin Tone

Hi there,

I’m planning to book a shade matching appointment soon, and I want to make sure I get the best experience. I have acne-prone, sensitive, oily skin (sometimes combo in the winter), and I’m looking for help finding the right tinted moisturizer or skin tint for my neutral-warm undertone (I think I’m medium deep).

Because I’ve had trouble in the past finding a good match with help from beauty store advisors (shades tend to lean too red, orange, or peachy), I’d really appreciate working with a beauty advisor who has experience with deeper and melanin-rich skin tones.

Please let me know how I can make sure I am getting the most accurate shade and skin friendly product. I’ve been recommended Tower 28 skin tint but I haven’t tried the product yet since I’m not sure of the correct shade. If there is a black makeup artist in the Chicago area/Sephora that can assist me, that would be great! Thanks so much!

Re: Shade Match for Deeper Skin Tone

@brilin28 , do you currently have a complexion product that is the perfect match for you? Even if it's not a skin tint, such as a concealer or a powder?  If so, bring that with you as a starting point.

Spoiler
(Also, you might be an olive overtone.  M wondering if your are because you started you'rea warm neutral, but usually undertones are either warm-neutral-cool and not mix.  An overtone however, works to that effect.

If you find neutral foundations kind of work on you, but aren't the exact match, it's usually because you have this overtone, so sometimes things look too warm, or too muted, depending on the products base colors.

Olive brands FYI: Pat McGrath Labs, Lys Beauty, Ami Colé, Armani Beauty, Dior has some but not too many for deep 😑, Range Beauty, Basma, Haus Labs runs cool but does account for olives in that way, About Face (available at Ulta), Gucci, Fenty Beauty and I think L'Oreal Infallible.

When getting matched, also consider your preferences and what you're matching your foundation to.. For example, some people match the center of their face to their neck if they have a lot of hyperpigmentation on the perimeter of there face.  Or, so you prefer the base to be your exact match?  There's no wrong or right, just what you feel most comfortable in.

Have them swatch foundations/tints in a couple of places, a good foundation swatch is usually on your jawline, down to your chin.  Take pics in store and also when you're in daylight to see the difference.

Good luck and may all your matches be in stock and flawless!

Re: Shade Match for Deeper Skin Tone

Thank you so much for the feedback. I’ve used the Nudestick skin tint in color warm in the past. I will follow your suggestions and hope to get a good match in other products. I’m considering schedule an appt with a Beauty Advisor at Sephora but I’m not sure if I would need one who is familiar with shade matching for my skin tone and type. Thank you again!
